Flick will look to quickly erase memories of the 2-1 defeat at home to North Macedonia when Germany pick up their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign again with a short trip to St. Gallen, a home Liechtenstein have adopted while their Rheinpark Stadion in Vaduz undergoes renovation work.It should be the ideal start for the new man, who led Bayern Munich to seven major honours in 18 months before succeeding Joachim Löw on 1 August. Flick can be expected to name a strong team for his debut. Members of his former club Bayern are set to form the backbone of the team, starting with captain Manuel Neuer in goal and Niklas Süle at the heart of the defence. Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka should hold things together, with Leroy Sane, Thomas Müller and Serge Gnabry providing the attacking flair. As an alternative, Flick could opt for the man whose career he launched with the record champions, with Jamal Musiala last weekend becoming the second-youngest player in Bundesliga history to reach seven goals. With three games in the space of a week, the new coach is likely to rotate between matches, but making a strong start is his priority and his first team selection as Germany head coach should reflect that.
Flick is a new name on the Germany bench, but Frick will be a familiar one to many in Liechtenstein football, with Noah and Yannik - sons of Mario, who holds the record as the country's all-time leading goalscorer with 16 goals in 125 games - both set to feature. They started Liechtenstein's first qualifying march in Group J, a 1-0 defeat to Armenia, and have brought renewed enthusiasm to the national team as they try to further their father's legacy. Yanik, who played in Germany's fourth division for Energie Cottbus last season, has assumed his father's striker role too, and already has three international goals to his name, while younger brother Noah - whose full name is Noah Zinedine Frick, in homage of two of Mario's idols: French tennis star Yannick Noah and legendary footballer Zinedine Zidane - plays just off his shoulder and has also already opened his international account.
Match stats
Flick becomes only the 11th Bundestrainer - head coach of the Germany national team - after spending eight years as assistant to Löw during his 15-year reign.
This is the third meeting between Germany and Liechtenstein, following 4-0 and 6-0 wins for Die Mannschaft in 2010 World Cup qualifying.
This is Germany's first game since the passing of Gerd Müller, who is second in their all-time scoring list behind Miroslav Klose with 68 goals. Thomas Müller is ninth on 39 goals, three behind Michael Ballack's 42.
Florian Wirtz became the youngest player to score seven Bundesliga goals last weekend, aged 18 years, 3 months and 25 days. Just hours later, Musiala - who is just two and a half months older than Wirtz - became the second-youngest, dislodging Timo Werner.
Germany are third in Group J after three matches, three points behind group leaders Armenia and trailing North Macedonia on goal difference.
Only the group winners qualify automatically for the World Cup, which takes place in Qatar between 21 November and 18 December, 2022. The runners-up enter a play-off for the six remaining qualifying berths for European nations.
