Robert Lewandowski can officially lay claim to the highest-scoring Bundesliga season of all time, having broken Gerd Muller's 49-year-old record.
Lewandowski had to wait until the last minute of the final game of the campaign to net his 41st goal this term, surpassing the 40 scored by Muller in the 1971-72 season.
With Bayern Munich already 4-2 up against Augsburg at the Allianz Arena, Leroy Sane picked up the ball on the edge of the area and unleashed a shot from distance. Though it was parried by Augsburg goalkeeper Rafal Gikiewicz, Lewandowski pounced on the rebound to score from five yards.
The goal led to wild celebrations, with Lewandowski ripping off his shirt before being mobbed by his teammates. Bayern manager Hansi Flick and his backroom staff gave him a standing ovation on the sidelines before he was swamped again at full time.
Lewandowski's achievement is made all the more impressive by the fact that he missed almost a month of the campaign with a knee injury. His 41 goals were scored in only 29 appearances at a rate of 1.41 goals per game, compared to 40 goals in 34 appearances for Muller at a goals-to-game ratio of 1.18.
Lewandowski ends the campaign with 48 goals in 40 appearances in all competitions, compared to 50 goals from 48 appearances for Muller in his record-breaking season. Muller would score a career-high 66 goals in all competitions the following campaign, however, so Lewandowski still has his work cut out for him.
Muller, who also played for Bayern, ended his time at the club with a total of 563 goals from 605 games. Lewandowski now has 294 from 329 so, again, he still has some way to go there.
That doesn't detract whatsoever from a historic season, which ends with Lewandowski winning his seventh consecutive Bundesliga title and Bayern claiming their ninth in a row.
Having also won the Bundesliga twice with Borussia Dortmund and the DFB-Pokal four times all told, Lewandowski is one of the most decorated players in the history of German football.
He is also certain to win the European Golden Shoe this term, with Lionel Messi his nearest rival on 30 league goals.
