Lee Carsley exacts Greece revenge as Curtis Jones breaks 41-year record on debut

talksport.com, 14 November 2024, 18:39
England exacted their revenge on Greece to majorly boost their Nations League promotion hopes following a 3-0 win.

The Three Lions were stunned 2-1 by the Euro 2004 winners at Wembley last month to end interim boss Lee Carsley's perfect start.

However, Carsley grabbed the last laugh in his penultimate match in interim charge before Thomas Tuchel's arrival.

The 50-year-old was rewarded for his bold selection choice to bench Harry Kane when Ollie Watkins opened the scoring early on.

An own goal put England in complete control before Curtis Jones became the first Liverpool player to score on his senior international debut for nearly 42 years.

Carsley can now seal top spot in his final match against the Republic of Ireland - the country he represented internationally as a player.

Belle of the ball

Jude Bellingham has shared his excitement about the emerging talent surrounding him at international level.

Curtis Jones, Lewis Hall and Morgan Rogers all made their senior debuts in the 3-0 win over Greece.

Bellingham told ITV: "We're all exciting players, we want to get on the ball and be creative.

"We're going to lose the ball and I think it's amazing that regardless of how many times we tried and lost it, we carried on doing it and that was the most important thing in the end, I think."

Mad about him

Noni Madueke has two assists in 17 appearances for club and country this season and both have come across his four matches for England, also assisting a goal against Finland in September.

His cutback converted by Ollie Watkins for the opener after seven minutes was England's fastest goal in a game since November 2021 (Harry Maguire vs. San Marino, 6th minute) and earliest in open play since Luke Shaw in the EURO 2020 final vs. Italy (2nd minute).

Keane: Proper team performance from England

Roy Keane on ITV: "He [Jude Bellingham] has that swagger and quality about him. He is an outstanding player.

"Clean sheet, quality and Curtis Jones' goal. You have to earn the right to play. Tonight it was a proper team performance."

Ian Wright added: "I love to see that kind of performance from England - passing the ball quicker, playing at a really good pace.

"The tempo felt really good from England."

'Curtis Jones is an outstanding player'

England interim boss Lee Carsley, speaking to ITV: "It represents that we are moving in the right direction. We won't get too carried away, we have a big game on Sunday at Wembley.

"It is just important the players played to their strengths. We have a lot of outstanding talent.

"The players that weren't here, we concentrated on the ones who were. They took their opportunity today.

"Curtis Jones is an outstanding player. He played really well, even without his goal. With his goal, it was an excellent performance.

"People were speaking last night about the inexperience in the squad but these players are playing for their clubs at a really high level."

'Incredulous'

England's win over Greece has been overshadowed by some fans being tear gassed gassed outside the stadium.

Travelling supporters endured a horrendous time as they made their way into the 75,000-capacity Olympic Stadium in Athens.

England fans who did get into the away end were also instructed to remain in their seats after full-time by stadium announcements.

Roll out the Red carpet

A delighted Curtis Jones was alongside Jude Bellingham and shared his joy at scoring on his first England start.

Put to him that he looked like he enjoyed himself on the pitch, the Liverpool midfielder told ITV: "I tried.

"Happy to come out with a goal too! I can go high or low and get on the ball and play."

Greece 0-3 England Reaction

England have won all five of their away matches against Greece, their joint-best 100% win ratio away from home against an opponent, along with their 5/5 record against Luxembourg.

Greece suffered their first home defeat by more than one goal since losing 3-0 to Italy back in June 2019 in a UEFA European Championship qualifier.

Greece 0-3 England FULL-TIME

Job done and Lee Carsley gets his revenge!

The scoreline perhaps flatters the visitors, but the Three Lions won't mind one jot as they seize control of their Nations League fate.

Automatic promotion is firmly in England's hands now and victory against the Republic of Ireland will be enough for top spot.

Ollie Watkins got things started inside six minutes, but the away side were made to work for large portions of the match afterwards.

However, Jude Bellingham's run and driving shot after 76 minutes ended the Greek's spirited fight.

And Curtis Jones ensured the three points were England's mere minutes later.

Greece 0-3 England

Curtis Jones is now the first Liverpool player to score on his England debut since Sammy Lee in 1982.

The similarities between the two don't stop there though, both goals came against Greece.

Both strikes were the third in 3-0 wins, providing neither side tonight score another as we head into added time.

It's almost exactly 42 years to the day between the two goals, with Lee notching on Wednesday, 17th November 1982!

GOAL!! Greece 0-3 England Curtis Jones

IT'S A DEBUT INTERNATIONAL GOAL AS THE THREE LIONS SCORE A THIRD!!

Morgan Gibbs-White is sent on in the aftermath of England's second goal for Conor Gallagher and instantly gets himself an assist.

Jarrod Bowen scampers down the wing and releases the Nottingham Forest talisman on the overlap.

Gibbs-White pulls the ball back into a dangerous area but there's still so much for Jones to do but how he rises to the task!

The Liverpool star whips out a delightful backheeled flick that leaves Odysseas Vlachodimos rooted to the spot as it finds the corner.

Jones is now the first Liverpool player to score on his England debut since Sammy Lee in 1982 - which incidentally was also against Greece.

GOAL!! Greece 0-2 England

77' - It's an own-goal but not that the Three Lions will mind!!

Jude Bellingham takes the adulation from his England teammates, and the tannoy inside the stadium booms out his name.

But it won't be his - not that the Real Madrid superstar doesn't deserve his due credit for his part in the goal.

It all comes from Bellingham's driving run and shot from the edge of the box that cannons back off the outside of the post.

However, it was clearly coming back out before striking the back of the diving goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos.

The Greek No.1 knows nothing about it as it trickles back over the line.

Greece 0-1 England

76' - A first sight of goal for Harry Kane!

Morgan Rogers is the 63rd player to make England debut while with Aston Villa. Also, it's the first time they've had two in the same year (Konsa and Rogers) since 2007 (Carson and A Young).

Rogers embarks on a positive run on his first senior outing before feeding England captain Kane with a pass inside.

The Bayern Munich striker looks to curl a shot from the edge of the box but it's well scouted by Odysseas Vlachodimos.

Greece 0-1 England

73' - Rico Lewis has a 100 per cent passing accuracy figure - 30/30 passes.

The Manchester City defender has impressively operated at both left and right back so far this game.

He is now up against a fresh challenge for the latter stages as Greece withdraw Giorgos Masouras for Giannis Konstantelias.

Greece 0-1 England

70' - It's been a bit of a baptism of fire so far for Lewis Hall with the Three Lions under mounting pressure from the home side.

However, it is still such a huge night for the left-back!

At 20 years and 67 days, Hall is the youngest Newcastle United player to appear for England in a competitive international since Jock Rutherford in April 1904 against Scotland in a Home Nations match (19 years, 180 days).

Greece 0-1 England

67' - Goalscorer Ollie Watkins, the man who assisted him Noni Madueke and his fellow winger Anthony Gordon come off.

In their place, England captain and record scorer Harry Kane is flanked by Jarrod Bowen and Morgan Rogers.

A huge moment for the latter as he makes his senior international debut!
