Klopp sends message to Man Utd boss Solskjaer after Liverpool thrashing

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp admitted he felt sorry for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after his Manchester United side were thumped 5-0 by the Reds.

A sensational hat-trick from Mohamed Salah proved to be the catalyst for Liverpool to record their biggest ever win at Old Trafford.

Early goals from Naby Keita and Diogo Jota helped set the Reds on the way to their biggest triumph over United since they also put five past them in a 5-0 win at Anfield back in 1925.

But despite enjoying a near-perfect afternoon at the Theatre of Dreams, Klopp found the time after the match to show compassion for his opposite number.

"Of course [I have sympathy]," Klopp told reporters after the match when asked on Solskjaer. "The last thing I'd want to be is in his shoes in this moment.

Jurgen Klopp enjoyed a dream afternoon as his Liverpool side ran riot in the 5-0 win over Manchester United

"In the moments when you lose a derby you don't want to go and answer questions, so it's for sure not nice for him."

The German's classy touch may have been lost on Solskjaer on a nightmare afternoon for the United chief.

His side left the field to a deafening chorus of boos after finding themselves 4-0 down at the break for the first time in their history.

Salah completed his treble to make it five after the break - and it could have been more as Klopp's side ran riot in Manchester.

And despite reiterating his stance on showing respect to their stricken adversaries, Liverpool's "insane" display left the German purring.

"What can I say? Did I expect that? No. What we did in the last third was insane. Pressing high, winning balls, scored wonderful goals," Klopp told Sky Sports.

"I told them at half-time to play better. We started incredibly well and stopped playing football.

"We controlled the game after the fifth, it was not about scoring more, just trying to get out without more injuries.

"The result is insane, I asked if there was one like this in history and if there isn't then it will take a while. The players put a nice piece in the book.

"It is special but we don't celebrate like crazy, we have respect for the opponents. We were lucky in some moments, United are not in their best moment."

The only downside for the Reds was losing Keita to injury late in the game.

Liverpool's first goalscorer was stretchered off the field following a wild lunge from United substitute Paul Pogba - who was dismissed barely 15 minutes after being introduced at half time.

"With Naby Keita, we have to see how serious it is," Klopp said after the game.

"It's very painful but we'll see. We'll only know tomorrow or the day after tomorrow.

"Naby is in a great moment. He's an outstanding player."

James Milner was also substituted, with Klopp revealing the midfielder had picked up a hamstring issue.
