Klopp gives Alexander-Arnold and Diaz injury updates in fresh Liverpool blow

mirror.co.uk, 10 October 2022, 15:04
The Reds lost 3-2 to Arsenal on Sunday to add insult to injury as both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Luis Diaz were forced off early at the Emirates Stadium

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed that both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Luis Diaz will require scans on their respective injuries following Sunday's 3-2 defeat to Arsenal.

The Reds manager had initially said "it doesn't look good" when asked about the pair following the game, with Diaz forced off in the first half after 42 minutes due to an knee injury, before Alexander-Arnold was substituted at half-time following a knock to the ankle.

But the German has since explained that both players will now require scans in the coming days, in what is yet another fresh injury blow for the Reds at this early stage of the season as they prepare for games against Rangers and Manchester City later this week.

Speaking after the game in his post-match press conference, Klopp said: : "Lucho we had to change before [half-time]. [It's] something with the knee, not good.

"He will have a scan and then we will know more. I have no idea about the extent and then on top of that Trent is bad as well with the ankle.

"[He] twisted the ankle, not good. Trent never, in seven years, went off if he could have played on. He was in too much pain, it started swelling immediately, so we will have to see."

Diaz has been one of Liverpool 's brighter sparks this season with four goals and three assists in all competitions, which included setting up Darwin Nunez's equaliser to make it 1-1 in north London yesterday, following on from a sixth minute booking.

But he was forced off the pitch just before half time with a knee issue and was seen leaving the stadium on crutches, while Alexander-Arnold joined him on the substitutes bench shortly after as he picked up a knock to his ankle during a frantic first half.

The 24-year-old once again came under scrutiny for his involvement in the build-up to Gabriel Martinelli's opener for the hosts within the first 60 seconds of the match and failed to improve throughout the rest of the first half as the Reds went into the interval on the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline.

Liverpool's right back has been a victim of his own high standards so far this campaign, contributing with just three goals in 12 matches and helping Liverpool to three clean sheets all season. The Reds currently sit 10th, with goal difference only keeping them in the top half of the Premier League after eight games.

However, both players remain a big part of Klopp's team this season and even though the Reds have endured a slow start to the campaign, their absences will create further problems in a side which have already had to deal with a long list of injuries in little over two months.

Alexander-Arnold and Diaz will now require further assessment to determine the severity of their problems, but with games this week against Rangers in the Champions League and an almighty clash with Man City on Sunday, they could now be doubts for both fixtures.
