Katie McCabe scores straight from corner for Ireland's first ever World Cup goal

Arsenal's Katie McCabe's set piece went flying into the roof of the net in just the fourth minute of their game against Canada, sending Ireland fans in Perth wild.

Kyra Carusa's chance was put out for a corner, leading Ireland's captain to have the perfect opportunity to pull off a move she's demonstrated at club level on the world stage.

She'd also tried the move in the World Cup debutantes opening game, a 1-0 loss to co-hosts Australia, but to no avail.

However, this time, McCabe's audacious move has paid off.

Sending the ball deep into the box, the Ireland skipper's in-swinging delivery completing evaded those in red and white, including Canada's goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan.

McCabe's teammates were stunned as the ball crept in under the cross bar and hit the back of the net, immediately running to their captain with their arms outstretched to celebrate.

Meanwhile the Gunners star stood on the spot and stretched her arms to the side, soaking in the reaction to her moment of magic.

McCabe was at the centre of the action in the opening game too.

She appeared to suffer a broken finger, but still put in a battling performance against the Matildas - including a couple of a tasty tackles.

And it was her history making goal that reignited Ireland's hopes of reaching the knockout stages.

But just before the referee blew for half time with the rain lashing down, the Girls in Green threw away their lead with an own goal.

Megan O'Connolly sent her attempt at a clearance into the back of the net, taking Ireland from second back to the bottom of Group B.

Group B's Australia and Nigeria are set to play each other on Thursday at 11am UK time.
