Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) FC's bid to win the Ugandan Premier League suffered a massive blow after going down 2-0 to Bright Stars at the Omondi Stadium in Lugogo on Thursday evening.
Samuel Ssekamatte and Joseph Akandwanaho were on target for the visitors in the second half to help them collect maximum points.
It was the hosts who came into the match as favourites having won the initial round away 2-1.
In the previous 15 meetings, the 13-time league champion had managed to get 10 wins, four draws, and a loss, meaning they had a good chance of getting maximum points.
Prior to Thursday's match, the Kasasiro Boys had won their last game against Onduparaka by a solitary goal while the Bright Stars had played to a goalless draw against the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) FC.
The Kampala-based charges made their intent clear when Sadat Anaku managed to get into a good area but failed to get the ball past the woodwork. The rebound fell kindly to Peter Magambo whose rebound missed the target.
Bright Stars opted to sit back and rely on the counter-attack, but they failed to get past their opponent's defenders. In the 39th minute, it was KCCA who once again had a chance when Andrew Kigozi came close but his attempt found the side of the net.
After the break, Charles Lwanga also had a chance to score for the Garbage Collectors but his chance in the 58th minute was blocked.
The Stars finally got their goal in the 67th minute when Ssekamatte found the back of the net. It was a goal that destabilized the Morley Byekwaso-led charges.
As a result, the hosts upped their tempo in search of an equalizer and probably the winner.
However, the leveller was not forthcoming and it was the visitors who doubled their advantage courtesy of Akandwanaho in the 81st minute.
After Thursday's setback, the Kasasiro Boys remain fourth on the table. They have won 11 matches, drawn four, and lost six of the 21 played. They have scored 43 and conceded 16 and as a result, they have 37 points.
Bright Stars have moved to the sixth position with 33 points. They have nine wins, six draws, and as many losses.
