Jorginho penalty gives Chelsea the win over Everton

Chelsea earned a hard-fought 1-0 win over Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday evening to get their Premier League campaign off to a perfect start.

The match was decided by a Jorginho penalty deep into first half stoppage time, although the Blues dominated most of the game.

Frank Lampard managed to get one over his former side towards the end of last season which all but sealed their Premier League survival, but it wasn't to be this time as Thomas Tuchel's side showed far more composure and ability throughout the encounter.

Raheem Sterling, making his debut for Chelsea, was a constant source of danger early on. He thought he had opened his account in the first period after N'Golo Kante's shot was parried into his path, but his rebound was ruled out for offside.

Still, Chelsea persisted and got their reward in first half stoppage time as Abdoulaye Doucoure brought down Ben Chilwell inside the box. Jorginho opted for a more conventional run up and slotted the ball in the corner.

Everton emerged strongly in the second half, going close on two occasions early on. Demarai Gray had a shot deflected wide, before Doucoure came close to making amends for his penalty concession, but Edouard Mendy made a brilliant save to deny him.

The hosts tried their best to get a leveller, despite not having a striker on the pitch. Dele Alli came on to attempt to fill that void but was unable to produce anything.

Sterling thought he had scored when newboy Marc Cucurella squared him the ball inside the box. But Vitaliy Mykolenko emerged to make a great block.

In the end, Chelsea managed to grind out a vital three points on what is traditionally a tough ground for them.
