It was reported that boss Steven Gerrard is willing to axe two of the club's foreign stars to make room for the 30-year-old.
Saudi Pro League clubs can only have eight foreign players in a matchday squad and Al Ettifaq currently have ten.
Lingard has been training with Gerrard and co. since becoming a free agent after his release from Nottingham Forest in the summer.
However, the former Manchester United star has so far been unable to agree terms with Al Ettifaq over a potential switch.
Reports suggest Lingard could be offered a deal in January but talkSPORT understands Al Ettifaq are reluctant to meet the player's wage demands.

A move to the club would see him join former England teammate Jordan Henderson after their 17 Three Lions appearances together.
Lingard trained with West Ham, for whom he played on loan during the second half of the 2020/21 season, in the summer.
He then travelled to Saudi Arabia for training with Al Ettifaq but looks set to wait longer for his next club.
Lingard made 232 appearances for United after coming through their academy, scoring 35 goals and assisting another 21.
