Jamie Carragher points blame at Alisson over Phil Foden's goal vs Liverpool

Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson made a slight error for Manchester City's goal from Phil Foden in the clash at Anfield on Sunday.

The Reds had taken the lead through Sadio Mane's cool finish but were pegged back when Foden struck a fine effort from an acute angle.

Foden had cropped up in plenty of space on the left-hand side of the box, with Sky Sports' co-commentator Gary Neville suggesting it was because full-back James Milner had drifted too narrow.

His heavy touch looked to have taken him away from goal but the 21-year-old wrapped his foot around the ball to send it arrowing into the far corner.

It was a top class finish from a player who was later awarded the joint man of the match award (with Mohamed Salah), but Carragher feels Alisson could have done better.

"He [Alisson] was fantastic, he was Liverpool 's best player by a mile in that first half, he kept them in the game," Carragher said on Sky Sports.

"But when Foden shoots, I know he is a great player, but you would almost think he would be crossing it from there.

"I just think the goalkeeper has lost his bearings because he's actually just gone a yard past the near post.

"As a goalkeeper, you don't go past your near post, I think he just made a movement thinking Phil Foden was going to come out to wanted to smother him and was maybe a yard, half a yard out of position.

"But listen, he still has got to finish that and that's the only place he is going to score.

"But I do think the goalkeeper's position did help."

Liverpool did get their noses back in front courtesy of an incredible solo goal from Salah, before Kevin De Bruyne's deflected equaliser earned City a share of the points.

City boss Pep Guardiola was aggrieved, however, that Liverpool finished the game with 11 men on the field after Milner escaped a second yellow card for a foul on Bernardo Silva.

Salah scored soon after, while Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp resorted to damage limitations by withdrawing Milner and sending on Joe Gomez in his place.

Carragher admitted: "What we saw there, he should've been sent off.

"You always know and the home team knows when they make the substitution it's like as soon as that foul happens you know Joe Gomez is coming on."

The result kept Chelsea - who beat Southampton on Saturday - top of the table, a point ahead of Liverpool, who have the same advantage over the chasing pack of City, Manchester United, Everton and Brighton all on 14 points.

Yet Carragher declared it is reigning champions City who remain the "team to beat" in this season's Premier League title race

Discussing how a win prior to the game would give Liverpool the margin they needed, he said: "I think if Liverpool are to reclaim the title, looking back on past experience when they won the Premier League they need to create a gap with City.

"Four points at this early stage is a decent gap, they're still the team to beat."
