Jamie Carragher adjusts Premier League top four prediction after Man Utd display

Jamie Carragher as revisited his Premier League predictions on Sky Sports following Manchester United's 1-1 draw against strugglers Newcastle United on Monday night

Jamie Carragher has revisited his Premier League predictions after Manchester United's disappointing draw against Newcastle United on Monday night.

United were held 1-1 at St James' Park in a lacklustre performance against the side who are 19th in the division.

Allan Saint-Maximin terrorised Ralf Rangnick's side and opened the scoring early on with a well-taken strike into the top corner.

The Magpies dominated the first half but could not double their lead and United got back into the game through a rebound from Edinson Cavani.

Newcastle hit the post and forced a strong save from David de Gea but could not pick up their second win of the season.

Although they are unbeaten in their last five Premier League games, United remain seventh in the league, seven points adrift of Arsenal in fourth, albeit with two matches in hand on the Gunners.

At the start of the season in August former Liverpool defender Carragher backed United to finish in fourth, behind Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool.

He chose Brighton as overachievers, United as underachievers, Mohamed Salah as top goal scorer and Emile Smith Rowe as young talent.

"I think I'm looking quite well there, actually," Carragher said on Sky Sports after Monday's game.

"Brighton have done well, City are big favourites for the title, Man United - that was pretty obvious wasn't it, it was staring you in the face?

"Mo Salah was always going to be the top goal scorer. Emile Smith Rowe is on fire - four goals in his last four games."

While United are still some way off fulfilling his prediction, there was one pick from August that stands out as being particularly dubious: Jadon Sancho as his one to watch.

HAVE YOUR SAY! What did you make of Manchester United's performance at Newcastle? Comment below.

"I'm not trying to back out of it," Carragher explained.

"I wanted to actually watch Jadon Sancho, because I had spoken so much about how well he'd done at Dortmund. And I think at the end of last season we didn't put him in our Euros squad and we got a lot of stick for that on social media.

"I hadn't seen enough from him and when I'd seen him in an England shirt I hadn't been that impressed. He was one to watch as in 'I want to see what he's about'.

"Listen, it hasn't started well for him, but he's still a young player, he's got plenty of time, a few years at United, but you'd definitely want a bit more from him, no doubt."

Meanwhile, fellow Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville selected Man City, Chelsea, Man United, Liverpool as his top four, Everton as overachievers and Arsenal as underachievers.

"I still think Everton will finish strongly," he said.

"We are only halfway through and they've had a lot of injuries. They've had [Dominic] Calvert-Lewin out, Richarlison, [Abdoulaye] Doucoure at times. They will be alright.

"Underachievers - you said Manchester United and I agree with you. I've said Arsenal and to be honest with you, you can flip a coin with them.

"At the moment they're doing absolutely as they should be, but they could still let you down in a few weeks. They're not someone you can trust wholly."
