Jamal Musiala becomes Bayern Munich's youngest UEFA Champions League goalscorer

Anglo-German teenager Jamal Musiala made Bayern Munich history as the club's youngest UEFA Champions League goalscorer with his strike against Lazio, aged 17 years and 363 days.

Making his second start in the competition, Musiala opened his account with a classy finish for Bayern's second of three first-half goals in the first leg of their last-16 tie in Rome.

The 17-year-old midfielder replaces former defender Samuel Kuffour in the all-time club rankings. The Ghanaian was 18 years, one month and 30 days old when he set the previous record with his effort against Spartak Moscow in the 1994 European Cup.

Roque Santa Cruz held the record for youngest Bayern goalscorer in the Champions League era (18 years, two months and 10 days), with contemporaries Kingsley Coman, Thomas Müller and David Alaba completing the top six.

It's been quite the year for Musiala, who turns 18 on 26 February 2021.

He became the record champions' youngest debutant on the penultimate day of the 2019/20 season, having made waves with the club's youth teams.

The former Chelsea academy starlet has since made a further 16 Bundesliga appearances during the current campaign, scoring three goals.

Musiala's eye-catching form has sparked an international tug of war between England and Germany.

The Germany-born youngster, who spent over half of his childhood in England, has represented both countries at youth level.

He earned U21 caps for the Three Lions as recently as November 2020, but is expected to receive an invitation from Joachim Löw to play for the Germany seniors during the March international break.

FIFA rules stipulate players under the age of 21 can switch national teams provided they have featured in no more than three matches for the nation they first represented at senior level, including friendlies.

The only exceptions to the rule are if they have appeared at a FIFA World Cup finals or confederation finals such as the UEFA Euros.
