Inter knew they had to win on Sunday night at Cagliari to avoid their rivals AC Milan being declared Serie A champions, and the Nerazzurri delivered.
A 3-1 away win for Inter means that the race for the Scudetto will go down to the final day, although AC Milan have their destiny in their own hands as they hold a two-point lead, knowing that a win or draw at Sassuolo would seal it regardless of what Inter do at home to Sampdoria.
Matteo Darmian opened the scoring at the Sardegna Arena with a fine header and the visitors went in ahead at the break.
Lautaro Martinez made it 2-0 shortly after half time, but Charalampos Lykogiannis pulled one back for the hosts with a thunderbolt left-footed shot from outside the area.
Lautaro settled the game and Inter's nerves, however, with his second in the 85th minute, coolly chipping over the goalkeeper after being played in by Roberto Gagliardini to make sure the title race goes down to the final day.
