Inter Miami vs Houston LIVE: How to watch Lionel Messi in the US Open Cup final

talksport.com, 27 September 2023, 11:08
Lionel Messi faces a race against time to be fit for Inter Miami's US Cup final clash against Houston Dynamo tonight.

The Messi in Miami era began with a Leagues Cup title triumph and now the Argentine can add even more silverware to his collection.

The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner has scored 11 goals and registered five assists in 12 games since arriving in America this summer.

But the 36-year-old played just 37 minutes in the 4-0 win over Toronto FC last week before he was substituted due to injury.

Messi then missed the 1-1 draw with Florida rivals Orlando City at the weekend with fatigue and is now a doubt for the cup final.

"We imagine that he doesn't want to miss the very important final," Miami boss Gerardo Martino said of the World Cup winner.

"In this case, yes I will sit down with him to see what his feelings are. … Here there are three questions: first the player, then the final, and then what comes next."

Martino added: "He doesn't need surgery or anything like that. It's just a matter of how much time the player needs to rest in order to play the next game. If it wasn't a final, we wouldn't take any risks. But because it's a final, there is a chance we take that risk."

Inter Miami vs Houston Dynamo: How to follow

Inter Miami vs. Houston Dynamo: Team news

Messi is set to feature in some part but the Herons are still sweating on the fitness of teammates Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets as well.

Benjamin Cremaschi was also subbed off late on in the draw with Orlando due to an apparent injury and remains a doubt.

Dynamo are also hoping Amine Bassi passes a late fitness test, with Corey Baird potentially leading the line otherwise.

Club captain Hector Herrera will be itching to renew his rivalry with Messi with the former Atletico Madrid star seeing his country Mexico dumped out of the World Cup after Messi's heroics in the group stage.

Inter Miami vs. Houston Dynamo: What has been said?

Dynamo manager Ben Olsen expects Messi to be fit to face his side as he opened up on the challenges of stopping him.

"We're pretty sure he'll play," Olsen told reporters. "We'll prepare for them in that way. They've got some options if that isn't the case.

"But we'll prepare for their best lineup unless we hear something more concrete."

He added: "There's been thousands of coaches that have tried to stop him and thousands of coaches have failed constantly, so I don't have the magic bullet to stop Messi.
