Ian Wright singles out Arsenal's big-name stars who underperformed vs Brighton

Ian Wright has singled out three Arsenal players for criticism following the disappointing goalless draw at Brighton on Saturday.

The Gunners were only able to escape the Amex Stadium with a point from the evening kick-off despite the Seagulls being without star man Yves Bissouma.

On a rain-soaked night on the south coast, Arsenal were unable to find the form that saw them march to three consecutive Premier League victories in the lead up to the clash.

And Wright feels the finger should be largely pointed at a trio of senior stars, whose performances fell well below the required standard.

Speaking on Match of the Day, the ex-Arsenal striker said: "It would be easy to get carried away with that result last week [the win over Tottenham ] because they were fantastic but this was a very well-drilled Brighton side in difficult conditions and a very young Arsenal side.

"I thought [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang, unfortunately, was poor, I thought [Thomas] Partey was poor. I thought Martin [Odegaard] didn't play very well.

"We know what Brighton are going to do, we need to keep the ball and get the counter-attack going. We could not do that today."

Aubameyang was one of the players lauded for his display in last weekend's 3-1 win over rivals Tottenham, with Paul Merson praising the club captain for "making the difference".

But the forward was found wanting against Brighton's organised defence, as Wright analysed.

"Everything was bouncing off Aubameyang. When he got into opportunities he couldn't quite get it out of his feet," he added.

"It just wasn't happening for him. It was an off day; we saw how sharp he was last week."

The result keeps Brighton four points and four places above Arsenal in the table as Mikel Arteta's men missed a chance to close the gap on Manchester United and Everton, who drew in the day's earlier fixture at Old Trafford.

But Arteta took a different perspective on the game, instead admitting his side were lucky to come away from the fixture with anything to show for their efforts.

"I think it was a point gained because I don't think we deserved anything more than that," the Arsenal boss said.

"If we did deserve that point it's because we defended really well the last 15, 20 minutes.

"But in general we never felt in control of the game, we struggled to break the press and get good sequences of passes in the final third. They made it really tough for us."

Wright concurred with the Spaniard's view, stating: "'In the end, I think it's a fantastic point for Arsenal with the way the team is, it's a young team, it's a good point, it's much better than I thought it would be in the end."

Arsenal were dealt an injury blow as midfielder Bukayo Saka was substituted late on and limped off the field.

His manager was quick to play down any injury fears, though, with Arteta insisting: "He should be fine. He got a knock, but he should be fine."
