Hertha prepare for the visit of Leverkusen buoyed by their first win under Sandro Schwarz. After being eliminated from the DFB Cup in the first round and losing three of their first four Bundesliga matches to start the season, the Old Lady claimed all three points against Augsburg. Dodi Lukebakio helped himself to his second goal of the campaign, before Marco Richter got his first goal since undergoing surgery to remove a malignant testicular tumour just over two months ago. Richter is expected to be among the substitutes once more, though, with Schwarz unlikely to veer from his winning XI. Midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng should at least make the squad after missing the trip to Augsburg with a muscular complaint, but striker Stevan Jovetic is a doubt after just returning to training.
Leverkusen have three points on the board, compared to Hertha's four, after letting slip a 1-0 lead in defeat to Bundesliga leaders Freiburg. Including their shock elimination from the DFB Cup at the hands of third-tier Elversberg and opening UEFA Champions League defeat at Club Brugge, it was the sixth time this season Die Werkself have come away empty-handed. A first Bundesliga goal of the campaign for Patrik Schick was one of two silver linings. Hudson-Odoi's cameo from the bench was the other. The Chelsea loanee provided the assist for Schick, and could be rewarded with his first Bundesliga start in the German capital. Head coach Gerardo Seoane can also call on Mitchel Bakker and Piero Hincapie following the defensive pair's one-match domestic bans.
Match stats
Boateng and Leverkusen No.1 Lukas Hradecky were 2017/18 DFB Cup-winning teammates at Eintracht Frankfurt.
Hertha have only won in 2022 when they haven't conceded (3-0 vs. Hoffenheim, 1-0 vs. Augsburg, 2-0 vs. Hamburg and 2-0 vs. Augsburg).
The Old Lady have lost all 14 Bundesliga matches in 2022 in which they've fallen behind. They're the only team this calendar year still to get a result after conceding the opening goal.
Hudson-Odoi is bidding to become the 15th Englishman to score in the Bundesliga, and second for Leverkusen after Demarai Gray.
Leverkusen have made their worst start to a Bundesliga season since 1982/83.
Die Werkself are winless in their last three against Hertha (D1, L2).
