Hannover reached this stage of the competition thanks to a 3-0 victory at fifth-tier side TSV Schott Mainz in the first round at the end of July. They have blown somewhat hot and cold since then in Bundesliga 2, although Saturday's 2-0 triumph over Arminia Bielefeld kept them in the running for promotion, now just seven points behind leaders Darmstadt. They are a force to be reckoned with on home soil though, winning four and drawing two at the Heinz von Heiden-Arena this term, with the solitary blot a last-minute defeat by a strong Hamburg side. Zieler, a 2014 World Cup winner with Germany, is set to captain the side once more. Strikers Cedric Teuchert and Havard Nielsen - both on target against Bielefeld at the weekend - likewise have plenty of top-flight experience, although the former went off with a muscular problem at the weekend.
Dortmund saw off 1860 Munich 3-0 in the first round, with Donyell Malen, Bellingham and Karim Adeyemi all on target. That was a debut goal for Adeyemi, who has since also scored in the UEFA Champions League and shown signs of enjoying himself in cup competitions for BVB. Edin Terzic previously led his hometown club to DFB Cup glory in his previously temporary tenure at the back of the 2020/21 campaign and will be hoping to do so again this term. The Dortmund coach may not, however, have Anthony Modeste at his disposal after the Frenchman missed the 2-0 loss at Union Berlin on Sunday, with Youssoufa Moukoko poised to lead the line. Gio Reyna returned from injury against Sevilla in Europe last week, while captain Marco Reus made his comeback on Sunday. Both could be given starts as they aim to regain full fitness.
Match stats
Nielsen and Teuchert are Hannover's leading scorers this term with five goals apiece. However the former has not hit the target in the DFB Cup since 2014/15, while the latter has never scored in 14 cup outings.
Hannover's first and only DFB Cup success came in 1991/92, when they beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 4-3 on penalties in the final. Since then the furthest they have reached is the quarter-finals in 2021/22, 2006/07 and 2004/05.
This will be the sixth cup meeting between these teams. Somewhat surprisingly, Hannover have by far the better record, having knocked BVB out four times (1973, 1991, 2004 and 2006). Dortmund won the most recent encounter 5-1 in 2012.
Bellingham is Dortmund's leading scorer in cup competitions this season with five goals, one in each match he has played in: one in the DFB Cup, four in the Champions League.
Reus is in line for his 368th Dortmund appearance, taking him outright 10th in the club's all-time chart. Mats Hummels tops the internal standings in the DFB Cup (41 games).
Dortmund have won the competition five times, most recently in 2021.
