Guardiola sarcastically 'thanks' Premier League as he moans about tight turnaround

The Manchester City coach lifted the Super Cup on Wednesday night, the first time the club have won the trophy.

It came after a penalty shootout victory over Sevilla where Nemanja Gudelj hit his decisive kick at the crossbar.

But City could not hang around for long at the Karaiskakis Stadium in Greece with a mega Premier League fixture coming up against Newcastle on Saturday night.

Guardiola hit out at the Premier League scheduling, sarcastically saying: "Tomorrow will be even more happier than today. Recover as much as possible, not one drop of alcohol.

"Thank you so much to the Premier League for letting us play on Saturday and not on Sunday and Monday."

City celebrated their treble last season wildly in Istanbul, including Jack Grealish who partied across the globe in the following weeks.

But Guardiola has told his players no alcohol this week with such a vital game coming up soon.

Newcastle got their Premier League campaign off to a flying start with a 5-1 win over Aston Villa, a side many had tipped to go toe to toe with the Magpies this season.

Their explosive rise in the last two years has shocked many and now a Premier League title charge might even be on the cards.

But as well as fighting on all four fronts, City must also contend with another competition - the Club World Cup.

The tournament has usually been somewhat trivialised by European clubs but FIFA are placing more importance on it while this year's Club World Cup will be held in Saudi Arabia.

Guardiola alluded to the competition in his post-match press conference on Wednesday night, grumbling somewhat about fixture congestion once more.

The Catalan coach added: "We are really pleased to have already one title in this season.

"I am really pleased for the club - this title we didn't have and now we have it.

"A tight game like this happened in the [Champions League] final against Inter.

"We also lost a tight game in the last minute against Arsenal [in the Community Shield]. Football in these stages, in that moment, is a coin [flip].

"Now it is just one thing to finish full circle and have all the titles this club can have. It's happening in December, when we go to Saudi Arabia to play the [Club] World Cup."
