Switzerland international Vargas only played the first half on Wednesday as Augsburg earned a late point at home to RB Leipzig thanks to Daniel Caligiuri's penalty. The latter was himself only a second-half substitute, likely due to the extra game during the week, but should be restored to the starting XI. That result means Markus Weinzierl's side have four points from their two matches this week, but they remain in the relegation play-off spot, behind VfB Stuttgart on goal difference. Die Fuggerstädter earned their midweek draw without suspended captain Jeffrey Gouweleeuw, but the Dutchman should slot straight back into central defence alongside Reece Oxford. Jan Moravek has started the last two games in midfield, having not been in the XI since August, so is likely to be rested and replaced by Arne Maier.
Of the three Bavarian teams in the Bundesliga this season, Fürth have fared by far the worst, sitting bottom of the standings with just four points. Their first-ever home win last weekend against Union Berlin looked to give them a real boost for their midweek visit to Borussia Dortmund. A 3-0 defeat may look par for the course, but the promoted side performed far more admirably than the score suggests. Coach Stefan Leitl freshened things up in attack with Cedric Itten and Jamie Leweling, but is expected to revert to his usual front two of Dickson Abiama and captain Branimir Hrgota. Havard Nielsen, the scorer of the only goal against Union, should also be restored. Sascha Burchert will remain in goal after Marius Funk was sidelined for several months with a knee injury.
Match stats
With four goals and three assists so far, captain Hrgota has been directly involved in seven of Fürth's 13 goals (53.8 per cent) in 2021/22.
The Clover Leaves have picked up all four of their points this term on home turf.
Fürth have scored twice as many own goals (four) as any other side this season.
With a top speed of 22.03 mph (35.46 km/h), Vargas is Augsburg's fastest player this season, and the 11th quickest in the Bundesliga overall.
Six-pointer already? Augsburg are in the relegation play-off spot 16th place on 17 points, 13 ahead of bottom club Fürth.
Weinzierl's side have won two of their last six games, but the Matchday 15 triumph in Cologne was their first away win of the campaign.
