Germany's post-mortem offers damning assessment of England after Wembley draw

Germany star Joshua Kimmich accused England of "simply waiting for chances on the break" after the high-scoring draw at Wembley.

The Three Lions fell 2-0 behind as their poor run of form threatened to continue amid several defensive errors at Wembley on Monday night. Hansi Flick's side are in the midst of a rebuild but were good value for their lead before England mounted a second-half assault on the visitors' goal.

Luke Shaw scored the first for Gareth Southgate's side before Mason Mount levelled proceedings just minutes later. Harry Kane then converted from the spot to put the hosts ahead, despite Bayern Munich star Kimmich claiming England's attack was one dimensional.

The Three Lions had been in the midst of winless run that had last for five matches, during which they had failed to score a goal from open play, and Kimmich clearly felt the hosts only had one method of attack. He said: "We were in control and deserved to be ahead. England were simply just waiting for chances on the break.

"We were too passive after going 2-0 up, defended too deep and didn't play with enough bravery without the ball. It's hard to explain. We've all got six weeks now to get into our groove and then we'll go for it."

Flick is aiming to prime a Germany side that have been knocked out in the last 16 and the group stage of the past two major tournaments. The four-time World Cup winners are by no means hotly tipped to claim glory in Qatar, with their boss admitting issues were highlighted at Wembley.

He said: "The first half was even, then we took a deserved lead after the break. We made individual mistakes at 2-0 up and conceded three goals in fairly quick succession, which cannot happen. It was positive that we came back again in the end. Today was a good test for us.

We can take a look of positives from the game, but also some negatives that we will have to address."

Germany's draw with England concludes their Nations League campaign, which saw them win one and lose one of their six games. Flick's side have been drawn in a World Cup group with Spain, Costa Rice and Japan as they aim to establish themselves as a global force once more.

Manchester City star Ilkay Gundogan has claimed: "Reaching the World Cup final is not unrealistic. Lots of things would obviously have to go right, but I don't think any country is miles ahead of everyone else."
