Gary Neville explains why Antonio Conte is not the right man for Man Utd

Manchester United icon Gary Neville has given his reasons as to why he does not want Antonio Conte to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Red Devils boss.

Solskjaer remains in charge of the club despite overseeing a particularly dismal run of form which came to a head on Sunday evening when United were demolished 5-0 at home by fierce rivals Liverpool.

The result ensures the Norwegian can expect yet another week of intense media scrutiny surrounding his job and future at the club while United's title credentials are seriously questioned.

In the wake of such a heavy defeat, some sections of the United fanbase have called for Solskjaer to be sacked, but Neville has stood firm in his stance that he will always refrain from calling for a manager's head.

Speaking as part of Sky Sport's coverage of one of the most miserable days in United's recent history, Neville explained his reasons behind being against hiring former Premier League and Serie A winner Conte - who is currently available.

"They won't bring a hitman in. They will stick with Ole and he has to win something this season. Any other club he'd be in trouble tonight," the former United defender explained.

"Jose was the best manager in the world and couldn't do it. I wouldn't bring Conte in to United. He's not a fit for United.

"I might be wrong but I don't think that he is. I think it would be wrong to sack Ole today. I sacked a manager after six games last season, it was the wrong thing to do, I should've let things breathe."

Neville went on to explain how the timing of Solskjaer's reign is actually fortunate for the United boss.

If he had been given the keys to the Old Trafford hot-seat immediately after Sir Alex Ferguson he could have been under significantly more pressure.

"If this was post Sir Alex aftermath Ole would be in massive trouble tonight.

"I think the club will hold their nerve and I don't think they've planned for another manager this season and they'll sit with Ole until the end of the season.

"There will be a massive outcry from fans and media from everybody that he should be sacked and I can understand why after that game. It takes some recovery."

"I'd like to hear from the board to communicate with the fans to say if they are going to back the manager over the next 6 months."

Solskjaer was backed with serious funds in the summer, overseeing the arrivals of Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane - yet they currently languish as low as seventh.

The Red Devils are eight points adrift of league leaders Chelsea and even sit three points off of fourth-placed West Ham United.
