Stars of the screen and owners of a football team in the fifth tier of English football, Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds attended their first Wrexham match on Tuesday, October 26.
The two actors bought the Welsh team in November 2020 and managed to see their boys in action almost a year later, as they took on Maidenhead United in the England's National League.
Wrexham didn't read the script
McElhenney and Reynolds won't have had any doubts about the task at hand when first taking over the club, but maybe their concerns will be somewhat larger following the first game that they have seen the team play in person.
Wrexham lost a thrilling 3-2 battle to Maidenhead at York Road, a 4,000-seater stadium in Berkshire. Perhaps the Welsh outfit themselves were starstruck, as the loss leaves them 11th in the National League.
Wrexham: A global force?
Owners McElhenney, famous for 'Always Sunny in Philadelphia', and Reynolds, who is recently known for his roles in 'Deadpool' and 'The Proposal', set out their plans to make Wrexham a "global force". The duo received 95 percent of votes from fans in favour of their arrival and now they look to put Wrexham on the map.
There are plans for the duo's endeavours with the Welsh club to be filmed by American channel FX as part of the docuseries 'Welcome to Wrexham'. However, with the fans of the club wanting to return to the football league after 13 years out, it remains to be seen whether McElhenney and Reynolds can give the fans what they want.
What next for Wrexham?
In their first 11 games of the 2021/22 season, Wrexham have taken 16 points and look a long way off becoming a global force.
However, with a manager who has rich experience at higher levels of English football in Phil Parkinson, the future looks bright for Wrexham.
Striker Paul Mullin has eight goals in those first 11 matches. He, along with his teammates, will be looking to impress their owners and play their part in building success for the Welsh club.
