Sallai has missed Freiburg's last two league matches after fracturing an eye socket in the 3-2 win over Bayer Leverkusen. Unavailable for selection during the September international break, it is still unknown when the winger will be given the all clear to return to competitive action. In his absence, third-placed Freiburg have played out 0-0 draws with Borussia Mönchengladbach and Hoffenheim. Ritsu Doan has started both games on the right wing, while summer signing Daniel-Kofi Kyereh has been preferred to Yannik Keitel in an attacking midfield role. Head coach Christian Streich's return to a four-man defence has also come at the expense of Manuel Gulde.
Like Freiburg, Mainz are winless in two. After losing to Hoffenheim - their second defeat of the season - the 05ers needed an injury-time goal from substitute Anthony Caci to rescue a point against Hertha Berlin. Bo Svensson's side slipped to eighth as a result, but will move level on points with Freiburg with a win. In a real boost to the cause, striker Jonathan Burkardt has been passed fit after missing the Hertha stalemate with a deep cut. Marcus Ingvartsen is another option to partner three-goal top scorer Karim Onisiwo in attack. With defender Alexander Hack serving the second of a two-match ban, Edimilson Fernandes could start as an extra man in midfield.
Match stats
Michael Gregoritsch and Vincenzo Grifo are on three goals apiece after seven rounds of fixtures.
Freiburg goalkeeper Mark Flekken has kept a league-leading five clean sheets, while only Union Berlin's Frederik Ronnow has shipped fewer goals (four compared to five).
Freiburg have won three of four away Bundesliga games in 2022/23, but only one of three at home.
Onisiwo scored three times across Matchdays 1-3, but is without a goal in four.
Svensson is set to oversee his 65 competitive match as Mainz head coach. His points-per-game average of 1.55 still outstrips predecessors Jürgen Klopp (1.51) and Thomas Tuchel (1.43).
Mainz are unbeaten in their last four meetings with Freiburg (W1, D3), and have won 14 of 26 all told (D6, L6).
