Freiburg made it four wins from five after turning the tables on Bayer Leverkusen on Matchday 5. The result took them top of the table, ahead of Borussia Dortmund - the only team to beat Christian Streich's side this season - on goal difference. Ritsu Doan stepped off the bench to score the winning goal in Leverkusen, and was on target at home to Qarabag in the UEFA Europa League victory on Thursday. With Roland Sallai sidelined, the 26-time Japan international should retain his place for the visit of Gladbach. The same applies to midfielder Maximilian Eggestein, who returned to the starting line-up in place of Yannik Keitel. Striker Michael Gregoritsch began the game on the bench, but is expected to start. Lukas Kübler is available again following injury, though impressive youngster Kiliann Sildillia will take some budging at right-back.
Gladbach's unbeaten start to the season was ended at the hands of Mainz last weekend. Daniel Farke's ensemble had taken eight points from the first 12 on offer, including one off defending champions Bayern Munich in a game that saw Sommer produce a Bundesliga record 19 single-match saves. The Gladbach No.1 will hope to have less to do against Freiburg, who famously put six first-half goals without reply past the Foals in last season's reverse fixture. He'll be protected by a makeshift defence after Nico Elvedi picked up an injury and Ko Itakura was sent off against Mainz. Marvin Friedrich and Luca Netz will likely deputise, while club captain Lars Stindl is in line for his first start of the Bundesliga campaign in place of injured forward Alassane Plea.
Match stats
Matthias Ginter made 154 Bundesliga appearances for Gladbach between 2017 and 2022. Vincenzo Grifo turned out 17 times for the Foals in 2017/18, without scoring.
Freiburg begin the weekend top of the Bundesliga for the second time in their history. The first was after the opening matchday of 2000/01.
Streich's team are unbeaten in their last 14 meetings with Gladbach (W10, D4).
Five matches into the new campaign, Marcus Thuram has already matched his 2021/22 season total of three goals in 21 Bundesliga appearances.
Gladbach have won just one of 20 Bundesliga games in Freiburg (1-0, 23 March 2022).
However, Borussia are unbeaten in their last six Bundesliga matches on the road, dating back to a 3-1 Rhine derby loss in Cologne on 16 April 2022.
