It is six games since Freiburg last lost in the league as Christian Streich's side have doubled down on their top-four bid in recent weeks. As a result, Freiburg went into the international break sitting fifth, level on points with fourth-placed Borussia Dortmund and just three off Bayer Leverkusen in third. The domestic form of Nico Schlotterbeck and Mark Flekken was last weekend rewarded with Germany and Netherlands debuts respectively - just reward for two key figures in the league's second-best defence. At the other end of the pitch, Vincenzo Grifo has scored three goals in his last four games and Nils Petersen is pushing for a start up front, but will find it difficult to dislodge Ermedin Demirovic or Lucas Höler. Yannik Keitel remains out and Kevin Schade is a doubt, but Nicolas Höfler, Woo-yeong Jeong and Philipp Lienhart could return.
Bayern's 4-0 win over Union Berlin on Matchday 27 - a notable victory for both Manuel Neuer and Lewandowski - sent Julian Nagelsmann's team into the international break six points clear of Dortmund as the record champions look to clinch a tenth successive Meisterschale. The break has also given Alphonso Davies another week's worth of recovery and the Canada international could feature in some capacity in Freiburg. Serge Gnabry and Joshua Kimmich missed out on Germany duty last week but both returned to training after the former's girlfriend was expecting a new baby and the latter recovered from the flu. Soon-to-be Dortmund man Niklas Süle has been back on the training ground but is not likely to start, while Benjamin Pavard is expected to return at right-back.
Match stats
Freiburg top goalscorer Grifo has just one goal to show for his 10 career meetings with Bayern, but three assists across his last two.
Jeong and Petersen are former Bayern players, having made two and 15 appearances respectively for the record champions.
Streich has overseen one win in 18 meetings with Bayern (D5, L12), and two against teams coached by Nagelsmann (D3, L6).
Lewandowski has scored 20 goals in 19 games against Freiburg, including six in his last seven.
Not including his own goal against Bayer Leverkusen, Thomas Müller has gone three Bundesliga matches without scoring, assisting or both for the first time since October-November 2019.
Bayern have 81 goals after 27 games. The Bundesliga leaders have seven matches left to break the Bundesliga record they hold for single-season goals (101, 1971/72).
