Four Uruguay players, including Edinson Cavani, given strong sanctions after World Cup exit fury

The Uruguayans were furious at the end of their match against Ghana in Qatar in December as they were knocked out of the tournament.

Post-match, many of the Uruguay players crowded around the referee Daniel Siebert and were aggressive in their actions, which have now been punished by FIFA.

Four players received fines and bans from international football which will now have to be served in future matches as FIFA make it clear that such actions are not welcome on the pitch.

Defender Jose Maria Gimenez and goalkeeper Fernando Muslera are each banned for four international games and must pay a fine of about €20,000.

Meanwhile defender Diego Godin and former Manchester United, Napoli and Paris Saint-Germain forward Edinson Cavani will miss out on one match and must pay a fine of €15,000.

In addition, all four now have to take part in some form of community service within football as part of their sanctions.

Siebert came under severe criticism and aggression after he refused to award Uruguay a penalty in their match against Ghana as they crashed out despite a 2-0 win, with South Korea's superior goal difference sending them through.

The Uruguayan Football Federation also received a fine of €50,000 and must play with a partially closed stadium in their next home match due to the 'discriminatory behaviour of their supporters' and 'misconduct' from players.

The game against Ghana had been shrouded in controversy with much of the attention surrounding Luis Suarez as he faced off against them for the first time since his infamous hand-ball incident at the 2010 World Cup.

Suarez was in top form in that game but ended the evening in tears following Uruguay's exit from the tournament.
