Former England boss Taylor lands surprise managerial role with non-league club

Peter Taylor, the one-time England manager, has landed a new job in non-league.

The 68-year-old took charge of the Three Lions for one game in a caretaker capacity back in 2000.

He was boss of Leicester City at the time but oversaw a narrow 1-0 friendly defeat to Italy. It was a game which saw Taylor take the reins with manager-in-waiting Sven-Goran Eriksson watching on.

He picked a youthful side and it marked the first time David Beckham would captain his country.

Taylor has quite the CV, with spells managing across all four divisions. His last role was with Dagenham and Redbridge, which ended in December 2019.

Now, he's back in the game after being named boss of Welling United. They play in the National League South - the sixth tier - and are in need of a boost.

They are currently second-bottom with four points from six games played.

Welling's website released a statement saying: "The club is delighted to announce the appointment of Peter Taylor as the new First Team Manager.

"Peter has had an illustrious football career both as a player and then subsequently as a manager, managing not only in the Premier League with Leicester City as well as various Football League clubs (leading teams to promotion on four separate occasions), but also at international level with the England under 21 team and under-20 team.

"Peter has taken charge of the first team's training session today and his first game in charge will be on Saturday away to Oxford City."

Taylor takes over a Welling United side struggling so far this season

As noted, Taylor has numerous promotions under his belt with Brighton, Hull and Wycombe.

He has also managed Crystal Palace, Bradford and the national team of Bahrain.
