However, Steve Cooper's men will be breathing huge sighs of relief having survived TWO penalty shouts from the Terriers late in the second half.
Often known as the most valuable game in football, the Championship play-off final offered both the Tricky Trees and the Terriers an opportunity to regain their former Premier League status.
And it was Forest that started the brighter of the two at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.
The East Midlands outfit had 86 per cent of the possession in the opening 20 minutes of the game, with the Yorkshire side happy to play on the counter.
Soon though, Forest had the chance to open the scoring, with Ryan Yates' header from James Garner's free kick coming agonisingly close, with the ball going just wide of Lee Nicholls' post.
Despite the Tricky Trees' domination, Huddersfield cleared their lines well, frequently deploying Sorba Thomas down on the left flank as the Terriers tried to hit their opponents on the break.
However, as the clock edged towards halftime, an own goal from Levi Colwill broke the deadlock.
Garner tried his luck again as he sent the ball floating towards goal from outside the box.
And Chelsea loanee Colwill had no choice but to grapple with Yates, with the ball coming off him and into the back of his team's net.
After the break, Huddersfield boss Carlos Corberán made three changes - including bringing on Jordan Rhodes who scored in the semis for Town.
Forest began to invite the pressure as the second half ticked on, and soon, VAR was called into action for the first time.
Harry Toffolo went down in the box after clashing with Jack Colback, with the midfielder clipping the Terriers' star's ankle in the 73rd minute.
But the penalty shouts were soon waved away after the incident was reviewed, and Toffolo was awarded a yellow card instead.
"He does catch him, that's a pen. Penalty!" former EFL manager Ian Holloway said on talkSPORT's commentary of the game.
"I'm sorry that's not right. That's the harshest yellow card I've seen in my life."
However, talkSPORT has been told there was insufficient evidence for the decision to be overturned.
The Terriers had another penalty shout dismissed not long after, with referee Jon Moss - who was officiating his final game - being unsighted as Max Lowe kicked through Lewis O'Brien's leg.
This incident was not taken to VAR, though, with talkSPORT being told it was due to O'Brien not having full control of the ball when contact was made.
In the end, Forest rode out the pressure, with their 1-0 lead being enough to seal their return to the Premier League.
It was the perfect end to a huge turnaround season for Cooper's Forest, who were in the relegation zone when he took over.
Finally, the club's long wait to play in the top flight once more is over.
