However, it's not all bad for the former Premier League midfielder, given he's reportedly already in talks over his next move.
Ozil's future has been up in the air since he fell out of favour and was later excluded by Fenerbahce for a 'fitness dispute' with then-coach Ismail Kartal back in March.
There had been speculation Ozil's situation at the Turkish club could turn around following the appointment of new manager, Jorge Jesus.
Now, though, it's understood Fenerbahce have opted to terminate his contract early, despite him having two years left on his deal, according to NTV Spor.
This of course strikes some resemblance to what happened at the Emirates Stadium, with Ozil leaving Arsenal six months early after a fallout with Mikel Arteta.
However, reports also suggest that the 33-year-old is already in talks with new clubs.
And it looks like he won't be travelling far to find a new club, with the report adding Istanbul Başakşehir are in talks with him.
This is despite Ozil's agent, Dr Erkut Sogut, stating he believed his client would stay at Fenerbahce next season, saying he'd retire rather than find another club.
"I think he will not play football in any other club any more. I can't see that - it will be Fenerbahce and that's it," Sogut told The Telegraph in June.
