FIFA open disciplinary proceedings against Uruguay for ugly scenes in aftermath of exit

FIFA have opened disciplinary proceedings against Uruguay and four players regarding their conduct in the World Cup group stage clash with Ghana.

The South American nation secured a 2-0 victory over Ghana but were knocked out of the competition on goals scored and finished third in Group H.

As a result, Portugal and South Korea were the two nations to progress to the last 16.

Uruguay's players weren't happy at full-time after failing to win a penalty following a collision between Darwin Nunez and Alidu Seidu.

This led to a group of players confronting the referee and appearing to manhandle an assistant referee.

As a result, Jose Maria Gimenez, Edinson Cavani, Fernando Muslera and Diego Godin all face potential punishments for breaching FIFA's disciplinary code relating to offensive behaviour and misconduct.

Giminez could face a 15-match ban for his part in the scuffle, while ex-Manchester United man Cavani was also filmed pushing over the pitchside monitor as he walked down the tunnel after the match.

The Uruguayan FA faces action for the same breaches of the code, as well as one relating to discrimination.
