Costa Rica were walloped 7-0 by Spain in their opener leading many to fear they would be in for another defeat with a versatile Japan side next.
An overall poor game took place though with few chances at either end as they cancelled each other out.
Unfortunately for Japan, it was a mistake that allowed the winning goal to come about.

Maya Yoshida's poor lobbed clearance wasn't dealt with by Hidemasa Morita, letting Yeltsin Tejeda find an onside Keysher Fuller.
And the right-back curled the ball beyond Shuichi Gonda, who was positioned dreadfully and could only paw at the goal-bound strike.
"Outstanding," said talkSPORT co-commentator Alvin Martin. "Absolutely outstanding. We didn't know it was going to be a finish like that. This is one hell of a finish."

One man who didn't agree with that statement was former Liverpool star Takumi Minamino, who was yet to take to the pitch in the game.
He was spotted on the touchline, waiting to come on, screaming 'f***' after watching his side concede the game-winning goal.
It's a huge blow to Japan's chances of making the knockout stages with their final game coming against Spain.
