Every England player's penalty record & best takers at Euro 2024 ahead of last 16

sportsmole.co.uk, 27 June 2024, 17:50
The Euro 2024 group stage has come to a close and 16 nations have successfully advanced to the knockout rounds with continental supremacy at stake.

Host nation Germany and holders Italy are among those to reach the last 16 along with England, dubbed pre-tournament favourites by many but have yet to reach the heights expected this summer despite securing top spot in Group C.

Gareth Southgate's men will face Slovakia in the last 16 and know that their performance levels must improve if they wish to remain in the tournament as well as avoid the prospect of a dreaded penalty shootout.

Spot-kick success has been hard to come by for England at major tournaments, winning only three of their 11 shootouts. Two of those wins have been in their last three shootouts under Southgate, although they most recently suffered penalty heartache in the final of Euro 2020.

England may get the chance to right the wrong of previous years at this summer's tournament, and here, Sports Mole takes a look at the penalty records (at senior level) of every Three Lions player in Southgate's squad, as well at the top spot-kick takers among all the remaining nations competing at Euro 2024.

Who are the best penalty takers at Euro 2024 ahead of last 16?

Out of the players who have taken at least 10 career penalties at senior level, there are only three men who boast a 100% record: Austria's Marcel Sabitzer, Netherlands's Steven Bergwijn and England's Cole Palmer.

Sabitzer have successfully converted a total of 12 penalties for club and country, including four for Austria, most recently netting the decisive spot kick in a 1-0 win over Azerbaijan in Euro 2024 qualifying in October last year. The 30-year-old midfielder last scored a penalty in April for Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga.

Bergwijn, meanwhile, has made the net ripple 11 times from the penalty spot. His one and only strike from 12 yards for the Netherlands was in a friendly win over Czech Republic back in November 2015, and that has since been followed by 10 penalties scored at club level for either PSV Eindhoven or Ajax, most recently netting for the latter in April in the Eredivisie.

As for Palmer, he became Chelsea's designated penalty taker following his transfer from Manchester City last summer and converted nine spot kicks in the Premier League during the 2023-24 season. The 21-year-old also scored his first England goal from 12 yards in a friendly win over Bosnia-Herzegovina at the beginning of June.

Metz playmaker Georges Mikautadze is next on the list with an impressive 95.45% conversion rate, scoring 21 of his 22 career penalties for club and country. The Georgian star is currently the top scoring player at Euro 2024 with three goals, including two from the penalty spot in Group F encounters with Czech Republic and Portugal. The 23-year-old netted four Ligue 1 penalties for Metz in the 2023-24 season, while his only miss from the spot was during a loan spell at RFC Seraing in 2021.

Completing the top five is Germany attacker Kai Havertz with a 92.31% conversion rate, having scored 12 penalties out of 13 at senior level. The 25-year-old has scored 11 penalties at club level for three different clubs, including a strike for Arsenal in last season's Premier League, while he converted his first international spot kick in Germany's thumping 5-1 victory over Scotland in their opening fixture of Euro 2024. Havertz's only penalty miss was also for Die Mannschaft in a friendly win over Peru in March last year.

Two names worth mentioning who narrowly miss out on a place in the top five are Austria's Marco Grull and England's Ivan Toney, who have taken 66 penalties combined at senior level.

Grull has played his entire club career in his native Austria, making his senior debut as a 15-year-old, and the midfielder has scored an impressive 33 of his 35 career penalties (94.29% conversion rate), including 12 for current club Rapid Wien during the 2023-24 campaign. The 25-year-old has not missed a spot kick in any competition since March 2021, although he is yet to take a penalty at international level.

As for Toney, he has scored a total of 29 penalties out of 31 in his career (93.55% conversion rate), including 23 out of 24 for current club Brentford, missing his only spot kick during this period in a Premier League game against Newcastle, before making amends at the second time of asking in the same match just 15 minutes later. Toney - who is yet to feature at Euro 2024 - scored his first England goal from the spot in a 2-2 friendly draw with Belgium in March.
