Only three years have passed since Italy's exhilarating run to glory at the delayed Euro 2020 tournament, culminating in their penalty-shootout success over England at Wembley in the final, but the Azzurri were dumped out of the 2024 competition in the round of 16 on Saturday night by Switzerland.
The likes of England, France, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands and hosts Germany, who beat Denmark in the round of 16, are among the leading contenders to dethrone Italy as kings of Europe, where the new continental champions will be crowned in Berlin on July 14.

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR IN TODAY'S EURO 2024 MATCHES
England vs. Slovakia
The pressure is firmly on England and indeed head coach Gareth Southgate to deliver a positive performance, with the Three Lions struggling for inspiration thus far at the European Championship.
However, Southgate's side were able to top Group C and have been given, on paper, a favourable draw in the round of 16, with England certainly the big favourites to overcome Slovakia, which would set up a quarter-final with Switzerland, who overcame the hosts Italy on Saturday.
Slovakia picked up four points from their three Group E matches to finish third and certainly have the credentials to harm an England side that are yet to hit top speed this summer.
Southgate is being tipped to make changes to his starting XI, but he will again be looking to the likes of Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane to provide inspiration.
Slovakia have plenty of talent of their own, though, with Milan Skriniar, Ondrej Duda and Stanislav Lobotka among the standout names in their squad.
Spain vs. Georgia
Pre-tournament, Spain were not regarded to be among the three or four favourites for this summer's European Championship, but La Roja have been incredibly impressive thus far.
Luis de la Fuente's side beat Croatia, Italy and Albania in the group stages, keeping clean sheets in each of those matches, to breeze into the knockout round of the competition.
Spain will be the major favourites to overcome Georgia, which would set up a mouthwatering quarter-final with the hosts Germany next weekend.
Georgia's story is a remarkable one, though, and it will be fascinating to see whether pure emotion can help them secure another incredible win at this summer's European Championship.
Willy Sagnol's side beat Portugal 2-0 last time out to qualify for the knockout round, and they boast the tournament's joint-leading goalscorer in the shape of Georges Mikautadze, in addition to the outstanding Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, with both players on the scoresheet against Roberto Martinez's side.
WHAT HAPPENED IN SATURDAY'S FIXTURES AT EURO 2024?
Switzerland were the first team to secure their spot in the last-16 stage of the competition, as goals from Remo Freuler and Ruben Vargas handed them a 2-0 success over the holders Italy.
There is no question that it was a well-deserved victory for A-Team, with Italy simply unable to match Murat Yakin's outfit, who netted either side of the half-time whistle.
Switzerland are being tipped as potential dark horses this summer, and they will now be waiting to learn whether it is England or Slovakia in the last-16 stage of the competition.
Hosts Germany then managed to advance to the next round later in the evening courtesy of a 2-0 victory over a stubborn Denmark outfit.
Kai Havertz and Jamal Musiala scored after Joachim Andersen had a goal disallowed for Denmark, and the match had to be halted in the first period due to a severe thunderstorm.
Home advantage once again proved to be crucial for Julian Nagelsmann's side, and they will tackle either Spain or Georgia in the quarter-finals of the competition on July 5.
