England's Lionesses greeted with raucous reception as Premier League returns

England's victorious Lionesses have been celebrated up and down the country, a week after they won Euro 2022.

Sarina Wiegman 's side defeated Germany in extra-time at Wembley last Sunday to win the first major tournament in the history of the women's national team. Their win sparked a wave of celebrations up and down the country, with the squad taking to Trafalgar Square the day after the final for a trophy parade.

Those celebrations have continued for six days after they lifted the trophy at Wembley. Players from the squad have been invited to grounds across the country for fans to hail them for their efforts for the national team.

Manchester City forward Lauren Hemp was invited to Norwich's clash with Wigan Athletic in the Championship, having grown up in Norfolk. Hemp brought out the matchball at Carrow Road, wearing a Norwich scarf.

The 21-year-old had been given the Freedom of North Walsham earlier this week and was greeted with a standing ovation from across the ground and tweeted her thanks to the fans afterwards. She tweeted: "Yellows. Thank you for the reception."

Matchwinner Chloe Kelly also brought the ball out onto the pitch for QPR's win over Middlesbrough. She had earlier met the QPR squad, who greeted her with a standing ovation and a signed shirt before she was then introduced to a raucous reception by the crowd.

Kelly tweeted after the game: "Great to be down at Loftus Road today 3 points and thank you for the Warm welcome back HOME." Left-back Rachel Daly meanwhile was introduced to the crowd at Leeds ahead of their win over Wolves, with the 30-year-old also getting a loud reception, as did Alex Greenwood at Sheffield United's win against Milwall.

Lucy Bronze was hosted by Fulham for their opening day clash with title challengers Liverpool. Before the game, she appeared on BT Sport to discuss the Lionesses' win ad the celebrations that have followed.

"The game was just a dream, the whole tournament was. To beat Germany at Wembley in front of the 90,000 fans who turned up, it was just incredible. And then yeah, just riding that wave of celebrations, excitement and joy," she said.

"It's all just been a whirlwind, it's been crazy. The fans and everyone have been amazing. Every game the belief grew and grew. That very first game at Old Trafford, getting through that game, that was the moment we were like these fans are going to make a difference.

"That made a huge difference in the tournament and then just the performances. The second game, winning 8-0, we were like 'OK, it's on now, we can score goals'. Every single game there was a moment we felt it was going to give us belief.

"The support we had was amazing throughout the tournament, but to be away from that camp and see for ourselves as individuals, every single player is still talking about it. Every day something's happening and amazing stories are going around."
