England player ratings vs Germany as super-subs excel but Harry Maguire woeful

mirror.co.uk, 26 September 2022, 21:10
England players fared very differently during an electric second half at Wembley which involved six goals, including two penalties, and no shortage of defensive howlers

England were held to a draw by a late Kai Havertz strike after recovering from 2-0 down to lead Germany with a matter of minutes remaining at Wembley Stadium.

The Three Lions fell behind in the Nations League contest to Ilkay Gundogan's penalty, awarded after a poor Harry Maguire challenge on Jamal Musiala, early in the second half. Havertz doubled the lead with a superb strike in the 67th minute, putting Die Mannschaft firmly in control.

However, the introductions of Bukayo Saka and Mason Mount transformed the match, and Luke Shaw bundled the ball over the line to halve the deficit. Mount then drew England level with a quarter of an hour remaining, before Harry Kane struck from the penalty spot to send Wembley into frenzy.

The mood was dampened as Havertz pounced on a Nick Pope error to level the score at 3-3 with seconds remaining. Here are the player ratings from a back-and-forth contest at the Home of Football.

England (3-4-3)

Pope - 4

Distribution and ability on the ball just not good enough. Late howler, bad night.

Stones - 6

Another injury setback for Stones as he hobbled off early. Had started well.

Dier - 6

Built on his good performance in Milan with another strong display. in the frame.

Maguire - 4

Dreadful night as his poor defending and mistakes gifted Germany goals.

James - 6

Looks to be the leader in the very big field of right backs. Good in defence and attack.

Rice - 6

Kept his head and discipline even when Germany began to dominate.

Bellingham - 8

Another impressive display amidst a disappointing defeat. Deserves to start in Qatar.

Shaw - 8

England looked better with a proper left wing back and he scored. Big performance.

Foden - 6

Tried to make things happen but did not get much reward. Subbed early.

Sterling - 6

Lively and dangerous even if not everything came off. His work rate lifted others.

Kane - 7

Slammed home a late penalty and always shows courage and heart.
