Leeds defender Pascal Struijk was sent off for the tackle on Elliott, which left the Liverpool youngster with a dislocated ankle and in severe pain, as physios instantly rushed to the aid of the midfielder.
Whilst many are predicting Elliott will spend a significant time on the sidelines, he may look to Merseyside rivals Everton for some encouragement during his recovery.
Gomes was on the end of a challenge from Heung-min Son during Everton's 1-1 draw with Tottenham in November 2019, which left the midfielder with a fracture dislocation.
The following day, Gomes underwent successful surgery and his progress in the following months was remarkably speedy.
Few expected the Portugal international to feature again that season, with the official prognosis anywhere between six months and a year.
But, just 86 days after the incident, Gomes was back in first-team training.
When he returned, Gomes was keen to ensure his teammates didn't go easy on him - something Elliott will undoubtedly be keen to ensure too, when he returns.
"They were there for me, they understood what happened to me," he said.
"They knew I came from a traumatic injury so thought, 'Let's go easy on him'.
"But I tried to make it clear that if I am training with the boys it is because I am available and I am OK to do that.
"So I was asking the players to be normal, don't go easy on me. I needed to prepare myself for the next step and the next step was competition.
"I needed to be ready to be on the pitch and be normal so let's start on the training ground. The boys they understood and actually it was pretty easy."
Gomes commissioned a professional videographer to document his rehabilitation and, during one of his 'vlogs', he said believing in yourself is the best way to recover from such a sickening setback.
"People have their own issues, their own problems," he added. "There are worse problems than I had.
"The message from me is once you want to do something, if you really believe in it and you push yourself to do that, you can do it, at least 95% of the time.
"What I wanted to do, especially with the video, was to be a good example for people.
"It doesn't matter your issue, your job, whatever you are doing, what you are suffering. Make yourself believe you can do something. That's my message."
Liverpool are yet to confirm the full extent of the injury but the teenager has vowed to 'give everything' to return back a better and stronger player.
"I'm of course absolutely devastated with what happened yesterday at Leeds but have been totally overwhelmed by the love and support shown to me by the entire football world following the injury," Elliott wrote on Instagram.
"Thank you so much to everyone who has reached out or sent messages to me and my family, it means so much to us. Also a massive thanks to everyone inside Elland Road for the reception you gave me immediately after it happened.
"I am now fully focused on my recovery and will give everything in my rehabilitation to be back out there as soon as I can."
