Kolo Muani's hit the ground running since joining Frankfurt from Nantes last summer. The France international forward, who claimed a runners-up medal at the 2022 World Cup, is the Bundesliga season's leading provider with nine, and has five goals to show for his first 14 appearances. He's a big reason why the UEFA Europa League holders have been able to scale the rankings to fourth, only seven points behind champions Bayern Munich out in front. Fellow World Cup representatives Daichi Kamada, Mario Götze and Jesper Lindstrom complete a free-scoring Frankfurt attack that's struck 32 times already this term, and put four past top-four rivals RB Leipzig in a recent mid-season friendly. Head coach Oliver Glasner is without defender Tuta, though, with young Croatian Hrvoje Smolcic in line to deputise after being allowed to settle in following his summer arrival and impressing during the break. There will also be no debut yet for Paxten Aaronson after he was called up the the US's January training camp in California.
Schalke's list of absentees is significantly longer. Forward Sebastian Polter has joined the likes of Liverpool-owned defender Sepp van den Berg and Uruguayan playmaker Rodrigo Zalazar on the sidelines, but there is hope midfielder Alex Kral will shake off a back problem of his own to feature. In better news, defender Yoshida has been passed fit to start. Needless to say, the Royal Blues need all the help they can get after an alarming return to the top flight. They're bottom of table, some five points adrift of outright safety, having lost 10 of their first 15 matches. Winter transfer window reinforcements Jere Uronen - a Finland international full-back from Brest - and Japanese winger Soichiro Kozuki are expected to go straight into the side in a bid to turn the tide.

The head-to-head record between these two Bundesliga founding clubs is evenly balanced with 35 wins each and 24 draws.
