Donny van de Beek's rallying cry after being hooked at half-time for Man Utd

Donny van de Beek has issued a rousing message to his Manchester United teammates after he was taken off at half-time in their defeat by Young Boys.

The Red Devils were beaten 2-1 by the Swiss club in their opening Champions League game on Tuesday night.

Van de Beek was handed his first start of the campaign and United took the lead after 13 minutes through Cristiano Ronaldo.

But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side went down to 10 men later in the first half as Aaron Wan-Bissaka was given his marching orders for a reckless tackle.

Solskjaer responded to this by replacing Van de Beek with Raphael Varane at half-time to move to a five-man defence.

Although he was not playing badly, it marked another frustrating evening for the Dutchman, who is still yet to nail down a spot in his manager's plans.

Young Boys would go on to win 2-1 as Moumi Ngamaleu and Theoson Siebatcheu struck in the 66th and 95th minutes respectively.

But Van de Beek does not want to dwell on the defeat and took to Twitter on Wednesday to write: "Time to bounce back together."

The Red Devils have the chance to do just that as they travel to West Ham United in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

Explaining his half-time changes against Young Boys, Solskjaer said: "The signs were there in the last five minutes of the first-half that they were going to get crosses in the box.

"We knew they'd put the big tall striker on and we had to deal with their switches a lot better.

Did Donny van de Beek deserve to get taken off at half-time? Comment below.

"I thought Rapha (Varane), Victor (Lindelof) and Harry (Maguire) coped with it well. Of course, the deflected goal for the first one, off Luke and it changes direction, but apart from that, it was the best way of controlling them."

Meanwhile, it appears likely Van de Beek will have to wait until next week's Carabao Cup clash with West Ham for his next start, as Solskjaer has seldom selected him in the XI for top-flight fixtures.

The 24-year-old has only played six minutes of Premier League football this season, but Solskjaer insisted last month there would be opportunities coming his way.

"When we come back from the international break, there will be games for everyone," the Norwegian told United's official website. "The balance has to be there between consistency and rotation.

"Donny knows that when he keeps on performing and training how he does for us, he'll be fit and ready when he plays."
