Marcos Alonso has been Thomas Tuchel's go-to in that position since Chilwell's injury and a good performance from Lewis Hall in the FA Cup against Chesterfield means he could also be considered as an option in that position.
But, with Chelsea still in four competitions this campaign, they need as much depth as possible, so talkSPORT has taken a look at three left-backs that the Premier League club could bring in this January.
Lucas Digne
The Everton left-back has fallen out with Rafa Benitez on Merseyside and the Spanish boss has confirmed that the defender wants to leave the club.
Having previously been at Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, Digne has experience in the Champions League and played plenty of big games throughout his career.
The Frenchman, who has now played over 100 games in Premier League, could be a really useful signing for the Blues, who would get a player that has consistently delivered at this level.
Sergino Dest
Like Digne, Dest now has experience of playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world, having signed for Barcelona from Ajax in 2020.
He has played 12 times for the struggling Spanish giants this season but Chelsea are reportedly keen to bring him to the club this month.
Dest could team up with his international teammate Christian Pulisic at Stamford Bridge.
Emerson Palmieri
Emerson wouldn't technically be a new signing for Chelsea, with the full-back currently on loan at Lyon.
The Brazillian has previously played 71 times for the west Londoners, and has featured regularly in Ligue 1 this season.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano says that the French club turned down the Blues' first approach to bring him back to the club, but they are prepared to offer Lyon compensation to get the deal done.
