Cristiano Ronaldo sent X-rated warning by ex-France player after Ligue 1 comment

talksport.com, 30 December 2024, 17:25
Former France star Adil Rami has slammed Cristiano Ronaldo for his comments claiming the Saudi Pro League is better than Ligue 1.

Ronaldo made the bold claims last Friday when he received two awards at the Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai.

"Saudi League is better than Ligue 1, of course," he said.

"France only has PSG. The rest are finished. Try to sprint in 38, 39, 40 degree weather and see...

"It is difficult to become a champion in Saudi.

"This year Al Hilal are better, Al Ittihad are top of the league, but I believe that we have to push hard to be champions.

Ronaldo stunned rivals when he turned into prime Michael Jordan for gravity-defying goal

"I've been champion everywhere I have (played) and I believe I will be champion, but I've won this trophy for scoring so many goals and assists and maintaining my level."

And Rami, who played for French clubs Lille, Marseille and Troyes, has didn't take Ronaldo's comments too well.

The former France defender said Ronaldo 'talks s***' and claimed the superstar forward would get 'eaten' in Ligue 1.

Speaking on a Twitch live stream, he clamoured: "He talks s***. You want me to show you images of the defenders in Saudi Arabia.

"It's not because he's had a crazy career that as soon as he says something it's the truth.

"I think it's a PR stunt. We have defenders, they are machines! You put him in Ligue 1 and he gets eaten.

"Cristiano Ronaldo, you know, I'm a fan. I'm Team Cristiano Ronaldo but he made a mistake.

"When he says that the Saudi championship is better than the one in France, he brings a lot of people with him."

Ronaldo collected the Best Middle Eastern Player and the Top Goalscorer of All Time awards on the same night he made the Saudi Pro League/Ligue 1 comparisons.

Ronaldo signed for Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr in December 2022, signing a contract until 2025.

He received the highest football salary ever, €200 million per year, including a guaranteed football salary of €90 million.

He made his debut for Al Nassr on 22 January 2023, as club captain, playing the full 90 minutes of a 1-0 win over Al-Ettifaq.

Ronaldo's move saw an influx of many players from across Europe transferring to Saudi Pro League clubs for the 2023/24 season.

The 39-year-old's incredible talent has continued since his move.

With him becoming the outright top scorer in 2023, he surpassed Abderrazak Hamdallah's record for the most goals scored in a single Saudi Pro League season.

He became the first footballer to finish as top scorer in four different leagues, the English, Spanish, Italian and Saudi leagues.
