Cristiano Ronaldo's impact on Man Utd's title hopes dismissed by Jamie Carragher

Jamie Carragher has poured cold water on Manchester United's chances of winning the Premier League despite Cristiano Ronaldo's arrival this summer.

Ronaldo was in talks with Manchester City but chose to rejoin United from Juventus for £20million during a dramatic conclusion to the transfer window.

The 36-year-old has hit the ground running, scoring twice on his second debut against Newcastle United last Saturday and netting the opening goal at Young Boys in the Champions League on Tuesday.

But Carragher insists Ronaldo's return will have a bigger impact raising the profile of the English game than it will on the Red Devils' silverware hopes.

"Ronaldo could prove to be a better signing for the Premier League than for Manchester United," Carragher told the Daily Telegraph.

"I am certain Ronaldo will challenge Harry Kane, Mohamed Salah and Romelu Lukaku for this season's golden boot.

"As we saw last weekend against Newcastle United on his second United debut, Ronaldo's mere presence is a certainty of goals, and his comeback has transformed the mood at his club and raised the profile of English football even more.

"But the broader question for United is whether Ronaldo's arrival gets them any nearer to being a team that can win the title and Champions League again.

"On the evidence of the first few games, albeit they have won three of their first five matches, I would say no.

"Ronaldo's matchwining ability will inevitably make United stronger. What his arrival alone cannot do is turn United into a title-winning unit or impose the distinctive way of playing they still lack."

Although Ronaldo scored after just 13 minutes against Young Boys in midweek - finishing from Bruno Fernandes' exquisite pass - United fell to a 2-1 defeat.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka was shown a straight red card for a poor challenge and the Swiss minnows were able to capitalise with two goals in the second half.

Red Devils manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer chose to take Ronaldo off in the closing stages of the match with the score 1-1.

The decision may have been taken with Sunday's trip to West Ham United in mind, with Solskjaer keen not to overburden the veteran forward.

The Irons were also in action in midweek and marked their return to continental football with a professional 2-0 win away at Dinamo Zagreb.

Both West Ham and Manchester United are undefeated in top-flight action this season.
