Cristiano Ronaldo joins Argentina flop and Chelsea star in a World Cup Worst XI

mirror.co.uk, 20 December 2022, 11:25
Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo scored just a single penalty at the World Cup 2022 in Qatar and was dropped to the bench by the Seleccao, while also being forced to watch from afar as long-term rival Lionel Messi inspired Argentina to a third world title Cristiano Ronaldo has been named in a World Cup worst XI

Cristiano Ronaldo has been named in a World Cup's worst XI alongside Lautaro Martinez, who was part of Argentina's victorious side.

The Portugal captain, 37, endured a nightmare tournament. He threw a strop after being substituted in the 2-1 group defeat to South Korea and was dropped for the 6-1 win against Switzerland in the last 16, with his replacement Goncalo Ramos scoring a hat-trick.

Ronaldo's tribulations in Qatar came after he left Manchester United by mutual consent in November. The veteran forward hit the headlines earlier that month for criticising the club's owners the Glazers and manager Eirk ten Hag in an interview with Piers Morgan.

Ronaldo has been selected in Sofascore's Worst XI after receiving a rating of 6.46. That is the fifth-worst rating in the unfortunate team - with only Bartosz Bereszynski (6.42), Martinez (6.35), Edouard Mendy (6.3) and Mathew Leckie (6.28) ranking lower.

Sofascore's team is the latest blow to Ronaldo's fading career. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner has struggled for form since the summer, scoring just once in the Premier League before his Man Utd release and failing to make a meaningful impact in Qatar.

Ronaldo scored just once at the World Cup, which was a penalty against Ghana. The Real Madrid legend tried to claim Bruno Fernandes ' first goal in the 2-0 win against Uruguay and failed to match Eusebio's tally of nine goals at World Cups for Portugal.

Do you think Cristiano Ronaldo deserves to be in the World Cup's worst XI? Let us know in the comments below!

As Ronaldo's World Cup ended with a surprise 1-0 defeat to Morocco in the quarter-finals, his long-term rival Lionel Messi went on to have the tournament of his life. He scored seven goals and provided three assists to inspire Argentina to their third world title.

After Messi's heroics in Qatar, the argument over who is greatest player of this generation has calmed. Messi has now surpassed Ronaldo's achievements at international level and claimed the only trophy missing from the Portuguese's cabinet, the World Cup.

"Ronaldo is of course the big failure of the World Cup, the opposite of Messi - the absolute winner," said Germany's 1990 World Cup-winning captain Lothar Matthaus. "He deserves it because he has given me and all football fans great joy with his qualities, the way he plays over 17-18 years - the player of the millennium.

"With his ego trips, Ronaldo has damaged the team and himself. There is no doubt that he was a great player and an absolutely lethal finisher. But now he has damaged his legacy. I find it hard to think that he can find a place in a team. I kind of feel sorry for him."

The other members of Sofascore's unfortunate XI are defenders Sergino Dest (6.5) Kamil Glik (6.63) and Abdou Diallo (6.47) and midfielders Hwang In-beom (6.53), Jackson Irvine (6.5) and Ruben Vargas (6.53). The formation is 4-4-2, for those of you wondering.

Sofascore's Worst World Cup XI in full: Mendy (Senegal); Dest (United States), Glik (Poland), Diallo (Senegal), Bereszynski (Poland); Leckie (Australia), Hwang (South Korea), Irvine (Australia), Vargas (Switzerland); Ronaldo (Portugal) and Martinez (Argentina).
