Emotions are running high between the United States and Mexico for Thursday's Concacaf World Cup Qualifier at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati, OH. The only two times these two met in 2021, Gregg Berhalter's boys got impressive victories in the Concacaf Nations League and Gold Cup finals.
You could say that the Mexican National Team is out for blood after these two defeats. But there's a massive catch for Gerardo 'Tata' Martino's squad. They didn't have more than half of their starters on those two matches and they do now. Namely, Hirving 'Chucky' Lozano and Raul Jimenez weren't at the top of their game when those two games occurred.
Both stars suffered horror injuries that kept them away for the first half of 2021 but they started the current season strong with their respective European clubs. Martino always knew he would eventually recover both players and Mexico would have a chance to get that revenge they want.
But things won't be as easy as they seem for Mexico, who lead the Concacaf Qualifiers with 14 points over the USMNT's 11 points. If they want to win on Thursday, they will need all the overseas talent they have on the pitch. This is where things get tricky for the USA, especially with their biggest star: Christian Pulisic.
What's going on with Pulisic?
The Chelsea star suffered a serious ankle injury during the September World Cup Qualifier against Honduras that kept him in recovery until the start of November. Thomas Tuchel finally played him again for 17 minutes against Malmo in the Champions League but he still needs to take it slow. After that game, the German manager warned Berhalter to be responsible with the United States forward.
Pulisic is expected to be part of the squa but he will start the game on the bench. Other "European" players who will definitely miss this match are Gio Reyna and Sergino Dest, both with muscular injuries. Whoever plays on Thursday, this match will definitely become a war on the field. This game will air on ESPN2, Univision and TUDN inside the United States. Kickoff is at 18:10 CT.
