Chelsea star Jorginho takes aim at Rio Ferdinand with UEFA award swipe

Chelsea midfielder Jorginho has shared a social media video taunting Rio Ferdinand after he was crowned UEFA Men's Player of the Year.

The 29-year-old helped the Blues storm their way to the Champions League title last season before steering Italy to Euro 2020 glory with his composed displays in the centre of the park.

Jorginho is a key player under Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel and has featured in all six of their games this season, most-recently the 1-0 victory over Zenit St Petersburg on Tuesday.

He was presented with his UEFA award at Stamford Bridge ahead of the Champions League fixture.

Jorginho was presented with his award by UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin

Jorginho beat the likes of Blues teammate N'Golo Kante and Manchester City talisman Kevin De Bruyne to win the continent's most-coveted individual award.

Revelling in his triumph, the Brazil-born star laughed off the criticism he faced after his £50million arrival from Napoli in 2018 by sharing a clip of Ferdinand's punditry.

The video, originally posted on the 'everything.blues_' TikTok page, shows Jorginho collecting his award after Ferdinand - speaking in 2019 - says: "He gets no assists, he's not a great defender, once a game gets like this against the big teams he gets overrun in midfield and he can't run."

Jorginho shared the video on his Instagram story just days after he was presented with his UEFA Men's Player of the Year trophy in front of his home fans.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin arrived in west London to give out the award and Jorginho said: "I'm just really, really happy.

"The only thing I can say is that I'm proud. Everything I do is to make my family and my friends proud of me, so I'm really, really happy.

"And I think I need to say thank you to everyone who was involved somehow helping me to achieve this because just me, that wouldn't be possible.

"So I'm really grateful to everyone and it's a thank you for them, you know."

Jorginho was not the only Chelsea player presented with an award by Ceferin, as Edouard Mendy was named UEFA Champions League Goalkeeper of the Season and N'Golo Kante UEFA Champions League Midfielder of the Season.

Meanwhile, Thomas Tuchel masterminded Chelsea's path to European glory just four months after he replaced Frank Lampard in the hot seat.

Edouard Mendy, Thomas Tuchel, Jorginho and N'Golo Kante each received UEFA gongs

The German's efforts saw him named UEFA Men's Coach of the Year.

Jorginho posted a picture of him and his three colleagues holding their award and captioned it: "Group work is the path to success. Magic season."

In a seperate post, he added: "Years ago I was just a boy like any other who dreamed to play football. Today I have the honour of celebrating this award with all of you, believing in me and supporting me.

"This award is for all the dreamers of the world, to inspire you to keep believing. Dreams can come true!"
