Chelsea's full confirmed Premier League squad as Thomas Tuhcel finalises team

mirror.co.uk, 9 September 2021, 15:00

Chelsea have confirmed their squad for the Premier League campaign.

Although the season is already underway and the Blues have picked up seven points from their first three games, the closing of the summer transfer window means that Thomas Tuchel can finalise his first-team squad for the new term.

Premier League teams are permitted to name no more than 17 overseas players in their 25-man squads, with the remaining eight places available to homegrown members.

A "homegrown player" is someone who, irrespective of nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to the Football Association or the Football Association of Wales for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons (36 months) before his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which he turns 21).

Teams can be supplemented by an umlauted of under-21 players regardless of their country of birth - easily surmised as players born this century for this season.

Having spent time the Blues' academy before leaving, £97.5 million signing Romelu Lukaku is classed as a homegrown player, much like fellow summer signing Marcus Bettinelli, signed as a back-up goalkeeper.

Unfortunately for Tuchel, he will be unable to call up Thiago Silva on Saturday when Chelsea welcome Aston Villa.

That is due to all Brazilian players - barring Everton's Richarlison - who were called up for international duty but did not travel due to it being a red-list country have been banned after FIFA invoked a five-day ruling which prevents them from featuring.

Liverpool will be without Alisson and Fabinho for the trip to Leeds, who themselves will miss winger Raphinha, while Manchester United cannot play Fred.

Both Thiago Silva and Fred also cannot feature in the sides' Champions League matches next Tuesday, with the Blues and United hosting Zenit St Petersburg and Young Boys respectively.

New signing Saul Niguez will be available, though, telling his new club's website: "I am so happy to be here. It was a great opportunity for myself and for my career.

"I had to take the chance to be here at Chelsea so I'm very happy and very excited. I'm really looking forward to training and, most importantly, to start working with my coach."

The Spanish midfielder already has some familiar faces to help settle in.

"It's really important [settling in]. Having [Cesar] Azpilicueta, Marcos [Alonso] and Kepa [Arrizabalaga], especially Kepa, who has shared a room with me since we started playing for the Spanish national youth team.

"But I already told Kepa to speak to me in English because I need to learn and get used to it.

He vowed: "I don't want to speak in Spanish with them. He can help me, but I'll try to speak to him in English as much as I can, unless I'm really struggling."
