Championship club's roof caves in during press conference in shock scenes

talksport.com, 12 December 2024, 13:04
Things are falling apart at Sunderland - literally.

Not the only are the club in a slump with just one win in their last eight - the Stadium of Light also needs a helping hand.

Their post-match press conference on Tuesday evening after their 1-1 draw with Bristol City was rudely interrupted.

Amid of host of gasps - and some shocked laughs - a section of the roof fell down as manger Regis Le Bris took on questions.

Luckily, nobody was sitting underneath the section, reportedly caused by a leak, that descended.

In the game itself, Sunderland were unable to trouble the Bristol in the first half.

They were also left frustrated after a penalty appeal was dismissed just before the break when Aji Alese went down in the box.

Luke McNally fired City ahead in the 63rd minute after Sunderland could not clear the ball.

However, Patrick Roberts struck in the third minute of second-half stoppage-time to snatch a point for the home side.

They were, however, dealt a blow when Tom Watson, whose first senior goals sank Stoke City 2-1 at the weekend, hobbled off early in the game.

The draw means that Le Bris' team have now won one in eight games, as their excellent start to the season continues to crumble.

They are currently four points off the automatic promotion places.

However, it remains to be seen if the likes of Burnley and Leeds United could fall, like Sunderland's roof, to allow a return to the top three.

Le Bris said: "We dominated the game, starting well with a good tempo and playing the way we wanted to play, with many switches and playing into the triangles.

"We had a lack of bodies in the box to receive the crosses and to deal with the counter-pressing to recover the ball quickly and create the second chance.

"The first half was positive and the second half was different as they changed their shape and defended in a different way.

"We struggled a little bit for 15 or 20 minutes and they obtained some situations and finally, on a set-play, found a solution.

"We had the character to score at the end but we can be frustrated because against a low block, we struggled to find a solution."

Former Sunderland defender Gary Bennett believes that the Black Cats need to start playing 'uglier.'

"Sometimes you've got to learn how to win ugly," Bennett said.

"We are just looking for that so-called perfect goal, aren't we? Where we can walk the ball into the net, or it's a flick, or it's a volley.

"It's not an ugly goal like what Bristol City scored."
