Champions League Final 2022: Date and location as Chelsea look to defend crown

talksport.com, 13 September 2021, 13:15
The 2021-22 Champions League campaign is ready to kick into gear as the eagerly-anticipated return of the group stage rolls around.

Following the qualifiers, this is the point where Europe's biggest clubs enter the fray and look to lay down an early marker regarding their aspirations for the season ahead.

Of course for everyone involved there is one prize that they crave - the title of being named as Europe's best club.

While there's plenty of matches set to take place between now and the end of the season, the hope for many is that they can secure their involvement in Europe's biggest match, the Champions League final.

Champions League Final 2022: Date and location

The 2022 Champions League final is set to take place on Saturday, May 28 at the Gazprom Stadium in Russia.

The home of Zenit St Petersburg opened in 2017 after being modelled on Kisho Kurokawa's Toyota Stadium in Japan, with the state-of-the-art stadium boasting a retractable roof and a capacity in excess of 60,000.

The Gazprom Stadium was originally due to host the 2021 final before the UEFA Executive Committee made the decision to move the showpiece event to Lisbon, Portugal due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Last year's final was certainly memorable for English football as Chelsea and Manchester City did battle for the ultimate prize.

While Pep Guardiola's City were seen as favourites going into the match, it was Thomas Tuchel's side who secured the title with a 1-0 win thanks to Kai Havertz' well-taken goal.

The Blues will be hoping that they can go all the way again this term, while the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool will all fancy their chances of reaching the latter stages of the competition.

However if they're to do that then they'll need to get past some of Europe's biggest names including Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain.

One thing we know is that whoever takes to the field at the Gazprom Stadium on May 28, they will be fully deserving of their spot as competition in the Champions League gets sterner by the year.
