The Bees have strengthened their squad this summer with the permanent additions of Mark Flekken, Nathan Collins and Kevin Schade.
They have been looking to bolster their attacking options in recent weeks, chasing deals for Nottingham Forest's Brennan Johnson and Fiorentina's Nico Gonzalez.
However, they have seemingly turned their attention to the middle of the park after Thomas Frank recently revealed that midfielders Josh Dasilva and Shandon Baptiste are out for an extended period.
Speaking prior to Saturday's 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace, Frank told reporters: "Shandon and Josh are unavailable, unfortunately both with longer-term injuries.
"A hamstring injury will keep Josh out for a while, and Shandon dislocated his shoulder in training."
Although they recently re-signed Saman Ghoddos, Brentford are determined to sign a central midfielder before Friday's transfer deadline.
According to The Athletic, the Bees have held preliminary talks with Marseille over a potential transfer for Ounahi.
The report claims that Marseille are not interested in sanctioning a loan deal, so any move would likely have to be a permanent transfer.
Ounahi was a key part of the Morocco side that reached the semi-finals at the 2022 World Cup, and his impressive performances ultimately earned him a move to Marseille in January.
The 23-year-old has struggled since completing €7m (£6m) transfer from Angers, missing the final two months of the 2023-24 season through injury.
Ouanhi has scored one goal in three competitive appearances this season, but he has reportedly been frustrated by Marcelino's decision to utilise him as a winger.
With the player under contract until the summer of 2027, the French side are in a strong position when it comes to discussing a transfer fee.
