Midfielder Kouadio Kone should replace Nathan Ngoumou following suspension, but injured talisman Jonas Hofmann is in danger of sitting out a third straight league game. Stuttgart go into their first Friday fixture of the campaign buoyed by a last-gasp victory over Augsburg. It marked their second win in three Bundesliga games on caretaker coach Michael Wimmer's watch. Six points across that period is already one more than in the club's first nine matches of 2022/23 under predecessor Pellegrino Matarazzo. The cushion on the relegation zone now reads a welcome, but slender, two points. The return of defender Konstantinos Mavropanos is a boost for Wimmer given Dan-Axel Zagadou has been suffering with a bout of flu. That could be the only change to the team that got the job done against Augsburg. It would also mean the deployment of Luca Pfeiffer over Tiago Tomas in attack.

Nico Elvedi is set to make his 250th competitive appearance for Gladbach.
