Sommer's heroics last time out saw him named Man of the Matchday for his record-breaking 19 saves in the 1-1 draw at Bayern. It keeps Gladbach unbeaten so far this season under Daniel Farke after two home wins and two away draws. The Swiss goalkeeper will hope to be less busy this time around and watch his attackers go about their business instead. A revitalised Marcus Thuram has led the way with six goals across five competitive outings, while Alassane Plea and former Mainz man Jonas Hofmann have also chipped in. Although the former went off with a knock in Munich, he's expected to be fully fit to start. Ramy Bensebaini missed the game with flu but is set to return. Opposite full-back Stefan Lainer, however, has only just started training again after a thigh issue. Farke said that new signings Julian Weigl and Nathan Ngoumou were squad options.
There looked to be no issues for Mainz after they won two and drew one of their opening three games of the campaign. But the wheels came off last weekend in a 3-0 home defeat to Bayer Leverkusen. Burkardt was hooked at half-time on just his second appearance of the season after recovering from a hamstring injury. In fact, Bo Svensson made three half-time changes in that game as a sign of his displeasure. The Dane isn't usually one to tinker so expect his settled line-up one again, with Burkardt alongside Karim Onisiwo - especially in the extended absence of Marcus Ingvartsen. The only spot really up for debate is Jae-sung Lee or Angelo Fulgini in the attacking midfield role.
Match stats
Sommer's 19 saves against Bayern was a new Bundesliga record in a single game. He'd made just eight across the first three matchdays.
Eight points from four games represents Gladbach's best start to a Bundesliga season since 1987/88.
The Foals have won their last four home league games, which is their best run at Borussia-Park since going eight on the spin under Marco Rose.
Top scorer with 11 goals last season, Burkardt is five competitive outings without a goal.
Mainz have won their last three Bundesliga away games by a 2-1 scoreline. Their club record for consecutive victories on the road stands at four from the start of 2010/11 under Thomas Tuchel.
Svensson made 32 Bundesliga appearances (two goals) as a player for Gladbach.
